[Win Variation cosplay] Light Texture and Detail Showcase of Umamusume: Pretty Derby Cosplay - Image 1

Deciding to release the official photos of Win Variation cosplay, and based on the unique traits of the work Umamusume: Pretty Derby, my makeup and styling focused heavily on restoring the character's vitality and agile charm.

The wig features a brilliant red with a white highlight added to the left side. When finalizing the hair color, I took the impact of light refraction into consideration to ensure the red tone could maintain a warm, rich saturation even under indoor cool lighting. The iconic combination of red hair, green eyes is a hallmark of her design. The red and white striped horn accessories on top of my head, paired with the feather hair ornament on a ruby base, stand out as one of the character's most highly recognizable features; I used quite a few bobby pins during attachment to guarantee stability throughout the shoot.

In terms of makeup, I pursued a clean base while focusing primarily on the eye makeup and blush. The green eyes serve as the visual center of the entire face. Using a slightly enlarging model of colored contacts paired with false eyelashes allowed my gaze to deliver a lot more energy. The pink blush, rendered over a large area, makes the face look more vivid and three-dimensional, perfectly aligning with her lively setting in the anime.

For the outfit, I opted for a sharp black-and-white contrasting off-the-shoulder design. The white buttons on the bowtie and lower hem create an excellent sense of layering, while the bright red heart-shaped badge on the chest acts as the ultimate eye-catcher. I intentionally adjusted the angle of my sitting pose to ensure this red heart was neither tilted nor obstructed from view.

I selected a relaxed sitting pose to complete this low-angle shot. Since the character carries the athletic background of a horse girl within Umamusume: Pretty Derby cosplay, this posture showcases the costume details beautifully while highlighting a touch of lazy, casual temperament. The grey ribbed thigh-high socks on my legs, combined with the black bows on the sides of my thighs, inject a bit of playfulness and sweetness into the overall look, which perfectly meets the youthful vibe I wanted to project when portraying her.

The intense lighting on my chest and the lens flare effect accidentally formed a natural visual focus during this shoot. The surrounding shadows, conversely, made the contours of my body lines much crisper, avoiding the flat feeling brought about by a large area of uniform flat lighting. The shoulder cut-out design of the clothes and the black-edged tailoring of the cuffs are quite exquisite; coordinating with this sitting pose, they elegantly expose the lines of my shoulders and arms, giving the entire form a much lighter presentation.

Aside from perfecting the costume, makeup, and props, I paid special attention to the on-site lighting for this shoot. To echo the character's primary color palette, I tried using a warm-toned rim light to treat the edges of the hair strands. This way, even in an indoor setting with a slightly cluttered background, the main subject could easily pop out from the busy patterns. The green eyes create a wonderful sense of interaction with the lens during low-angle upward shots, a perspective that brilliantly highlights the layering of the character's upper body outfit.

The white highlight of the wig easily scatters due to gravity when worn. To prevent this, I applied a small amount of hairspray at the roots of the hairpieces in advance to hold their shape, ensuring the entire styling maintained its original direction throughout the continuous one-hour shoot. Because the red and white horn accessories are relatively large, I also took extra care to keep them left-right symmetrical on camera, preventing the visual center of gravity from shifting due to a tilted shooting angle.

While the overall black and white color scheme of the costume appears minimalist, there are many verifiable details along the stitching lines of the bowtie, buttons, and cuffs. In terms of positioning, besides the current sitting pose, I previously experimented with standing and half-squatting camera placements, but comparison revealed that this relaxed sitting posture best embodies the character's composed nature. The ribbed details of the grey socks also enhance the texture of the lower half of the frame, making it look far from monotonous.

Looking back at this full set of works, every step—from the initial trimming of the wig and the fixed-point installation of the hair accessories to the coordination of the costume and the selection of on-site camera angles—was carefully deliberated. The worldview of Umamusume: Pretty Derby is filled with characters rich in story elements. The unique atmosphere of Win Variation, switching effortlessly between running and daily life, needs to be conveyed through glances and body language. This shoot successfully captured exactly that confident yet slightly lazy state she wanted to express.
