Putting on this exquisite and complex gothic attire and standing by the wooden ladder, at the moment the light and shadow interweave, it feels as if the entire atmosphere has been drawn back into that mysterious world of red and black.
This shoot was set in a retro study with a dark wooden structure; the walls filled with books and the dim, warm lighting are perfect for expressing the character's mysterious aura. In terms of clothing, the main body is a classic gothic style cosplay design, with a black off-shoulder slip paired with bright red bows and buttons as accents. Together with the vintage red bowtie at the neck, the contrasting colors of red and black bring a powerful visual impact. To fully replicate the overall look, I specially wore pointed elf ears and black horn hair accessories, which, along with the pink twin-tails wig, required meticulous styling and coordination from top to bottom.
I really love the detached sleeve design of this outfit; the large areas of white multi-layered ruffles look incredibly magnificent, and the wide flared sleeves create an excellent sense of motion during body movements. The lower body is paired with glossy black over-knee high-heeled boots, whose leather texture yields a highly prominent reflection under side lighting, which not only visually elongates the leg lines but also adds a touch of crispness and coolness to the overall styling. On the day of the shoot, many exquisite props were arranged on the tabletop—a bunch of green grapes, a red apple, vintage tea sets, as well as a birdcage and candlesticks, working with the bookshelf behind to create a lazy yet mysterious sense of story.
For the pose design, I mainly relied on the wooden ladder and the solid wood desk. The ladder is an excellent compositional element that can naturally display the character's figure and the large flared sleeves of the costume. When sitting on the wide desktop, crossing or slightly raising the legs can better display the features of the glossy long boots. Paired with a wine glass or a red apple in hand, my gaze can carry a touch of nonchalance or playful charm. This casual sitting and standing posture fits the character's inherent lazy temperament while perfectly blending into the heavy, vintage background.
The lighting during the shoot was one of the keys to the success of these photos. The photographer utilized strong side and top lighting, forming a highly distinct contrast between light and dark. The highlights cast upon the skin's contours and the clothing folds, while the shadows were left to the bookshelf behind. This dramatic light and shadow effect beautifully highlighted the three-dimensionality of the face and the material of the clothes. I particularly love the blending of light halos in several places, giving the entire frame a more oil-painting-like quality. Meanwhile, the shallow depth of field brought by the large aperture appropriately blurred the complex background bookshelf, making the subject clearer.
When shooting a work with a specific character setting, the most important point is to grasp that unique "tsundere" and mysterious edge of the character. Be casual when holding the goblet, and wear a slightly sly smile when holding the apple. Through the eyes and subtle facial expressions, combined with the interaction between hand movements and props, I did my best to give the flat photos a dynamic sense of story. This experience in a retro library photo shoot was highly immersive; putting on this outfit and matching it with the scene and props allowed me to quickly enter the character's state. Every press of the shutter felt like freezing a certain daily moment of this mysterious girl in the study, and I hope the final output brings an immersive visual experience to everyone.
