This time I'm sharing duo cosplay photos of the characters Ganyu and Keqing from Genshin Impact. We chose to do this shoot in an outdoor garden area, utilizing natural light and real scenes, hoping to restore the true atmosphere of the two characters hanging out daily in Liyue Harbor.
Regarding this Ganyu Cosplay costume I'm wearing, to stay close to the character, the wig selected features a light blue with a slight pearlescent feel. The signature ahoge on the top of the head and the hair buns on both sides underwent repeated trimming and styling to ensure they won't look frizzy or collapsed under outdoor natural light. The clothing's neckline utilizes golden metal-textured decorations, paired with a Chinese-style bowtie and a red string on the neck. Although these details increase the difficulty of wearing, they are indispensable steps for restoration. Since I appeared as Ganyu this time, for the eye makeup, I specially emphasized the smudge of the upper eyeshadow, paired with purple contact lenses, hoping to present the character's gaze that is both cool and carries a touch of gentleness before the lens.
Beside me is the Keqing cosplayer who appeared with me. The purple wig she wears has an excellent texture, presenting a natural reflection effect under the sun. Paired with that pair of black ear decorations and a deep blue satin ribbon bow, it maximizes the character's playful and nimble feel. Pearl-like ornaments are embellished among the hair, also serving as a great crowning touch. This time we are mainly featuring the "Heart's Content" combo quite familiar among the player community, so in this photo, we specially designed an interactive hand gesture of making a heart with both hands. The angle of both people leaning slightly, paired with the composition of intertwined arms, allows the frame to look intimate and natural without losing layers. This makes it a standout piece of Keqing cosplay alongside my Ganyu look.
In terms of shooting equipment choice, we didn't use an overly complex flash system but fully utilized the light around 10 AM. The light from this time frame filters through the nearby bushes, outlining very beautiful rim light on the hair strands while softening the originally somewhat cold-toned wig. Regarding post-production color grading, I slightly lowered the overall contrast of the photos and lifted the details in the shadows, attempting to make the frame look soft and carrying a dreamlike texture, which fits the overall temperament of Liyue characters better.
Actually, shooting this kind of interactive duo cosplay photos, tacit understanding is highly crucial. Looking at this simple heart-making gesture in the photo, we adjusted it quite a lot on-site. Both people's arms needed to maintain a perfect angle, both to avoid blocking the clothing details on the chest and to just perfectly constitute a complete heart shape. Meanwhile, it also needed to coordinate with the lens's focal length, preventing anyone from being squeezed out of the frame's edge. Plus, a large aperture builds excellent background bokeh, but if the focus shifts slightly, the face will blur out. After attempting quite a few times, we finally snapped this photo with a natural demeanor and balanced composition. This represents a fine practice of Cosplay photography.
In the Cosplay community, it's often said that three parts depend on costumes and seven parts on makeup and styling, but I believe there are an even more important five parts depending on the atmosphere. The greenery and wooden chairs in the background provided an excellent natural environment, making these characters originally existing in the 2D world seem as if they truly stepped into reality. In the photos, they are no longer just the admired adeptus or the noble Yuheng of the game, but look like good friends sitting together on a park bench on a certain afternoon. This lifestyle-like aura is the effect I have been working hard to pursue in my shoots.
Doing a duo outdoor photoshoot is undoubtedly very hard, especially maintaining clean makeup and fluffy wigs outdoors. But from finalizing the makeup and preparing props to the actual shooting and the moment of reviewing the samples, every bit of exhaustion in between becomes worth it. We carefully combed this Genshin Impact duo's wigs multiple times, and we also pre-tried the details of the outerwear at home several times, even bringing some spare small props to prevent the clothes from getting dirty during the outdoor shoot. These trivial preparations are all to present the most confident and natural side at the moment the shutter is pressed.
Whether it's the pairing of clothing, the management of wigs, or the photographer's location selection and composition, everything blended very appropriately in this duo outdoor photoshoot. This "Heart's Content" combo was ultimately frozen in time through the lens and real scenes, becoming a special memory in our photography works. It truly encapsulates the beauty of Cosplay photography.
