This time at Nanning Xiadian D2, I cosplayed Formidable from Azur Lane, choosing this special styling that combines a maid and a young lady. Preparing this outfit took a lot of thought, from costume material selection to wig trimming, handling every step personally. The overall clothing is a black-and-white color scheme, a very classic Gothic Lolita style. To highlight the noble aura of a young lady, the skirt hem was designed with a multi-layered structure, where the outer black lace and inner white sequin edges intertwine, creating a great sense of layering when walking. The white apron in front of the chest is dotted with a few red heart-shaped buttons, echoing the huge gray polka-dot bow on the side of the waist, preventing the visual from appearing too monotonous.
The wig was trimmed into a style with blunt bangs and flat sideburns on both sides, and silver-white long hair extensions were added to increase the length. This kind of hairstyle is actually very stuffy and hot in high-temperature weather, but the effect presented in front of the lens is truly very faithful. In terms of makeup, I heavily emphasized the red pupils of the eyes, applying a large area of red blush around the eye area and cheeks, matching highlights and a pale base makeup, attempting to create a yandere temperament similar to an exquisite doll.
When shooting this set of photos, the venue background included anime posters and display boards with blue cartoon cats. To fit the character, I designed some interactive poses. The one holding a wooden-framed circular disc actually used the prop to enhance frame composition; holding the edge lightly with both hands and lowering the gaze slightly helps better concentrate the visual center on the lace details of the upper body. As for the full-body standing shot, it was meant to showcase the complete pattern of the skirt. I gently lifted the skirt hem with my hand, paired with White stockings, which not only elongated the overall line proportions but also made the gorgeous feeling of this costume more intuitively presented. Moving around in this outfit at the event venue is actually somewhat inconvenient, as the multi-layered skirt hem is very easy to step on, requiring special attention to foot placement when walking.
The atmosphere of Nanning Xiadian has always been great, and although the lighting on site was complex, it had the advantage of a bright environment. To ensure the durability of the makeup, I brought plenty of touch-up tools, choosing an oil-control and sweat-proof formula for the base makeup, allowing me to maintain a clean makeup effect even after shuttling through the crowd for a large part of the day. During the shooting process, the photographer and I constantly communicated about lighting angles, making the most of the on-site diffuse light so that the texture of the white lace on the clothes remained clearly visible. As a highlight of the entire outfit, the red heart-shaped buttons easily lose color under backlight environments, so we continuously adjusted our positions to ensure the light could illuminate the details on the chest.
As an enthusiast who frequently does cosplay, I care deeply about costume accuracy and character portrayal. The character Formidable herself carries a trait where elegance and tsundere coexist, and the collision of the maid outfit and young lady style happens to showcase this multi-layered character personality. Every single styling and shoot is a deep understanding of the character. From fabric selection to wig styling, from expression management to limb expression, every single link requires repeated refinement. I hope this set of photos can convey the design aesthetic of this costume, and I also look forward to presenting more visual works of different styles at future comic conventions.
