This Rem kitty styling presented at the Zhengzhou ZCZ Anime Convention had been prepared well in advance. To differentiate it slightly from the original maid outfit, I invested a lot of thought into the accessories. The blue-and-white color-blocked dress combined with ruffled lace designs yields an extraordinarily rich visual layering, while the back cutout and massive white bow introduce delightful subtle details. The wig bangs were given a subtle curl, which, paired with the pink-and-white cat ears and yellow hairpin, established a lighthearted and lively foundation for the overall color palette.
On the day of the Convention photos shoot, the venue's lighting was quite complex. After consulting with the photographer Qiufeng, we selected a spot featuring a bit of spatial depth and relatively clean lighting. The first standing image was actually intended to capture the dynamic flow of the entire outfit. The over-the-shoulder look-back pose not only fully displays the back tailoring and the cat tail, but also makes the skirt's arc appear fuller. Because the skirt hem is shorter in the front and longer in the back, paired with White stockings and platform high heels, the overall bodily proportions look remarkably elongated through the lens. Those heels are indeed quite high with a thick platform; standing for extended periods makes the ankles ache slightly, but to achieve the ideal full-body effect, that minor fatigue is easily overcome.
To prevent the tail from looking overly rigid, I gently lifted the edge of the skirt hem with my hand to carve out space for the tail, and the photographer managed to capture this exact candid moment. The subsequent photo of me sitting on the ground actually required much more effort to adjust postures. Because the skirt features an abundance of white lace and pleats, sitting directly on the floor tends to flatten everything into a mess; thus, I had to keep one leg straight while bending the other, spreading the skirt hem smoothly along the direction of my legs to keep both the fabric's texture and the White stockings in a comfortable state. The tail drapes naturally from behind, perfectly balancing the negative space at the bottom of the frame.
In fact, the dark reflective floor of the convention venue acts as a fantastic reflector, supplying a bit of fill light to the lower sections of the costume in shaded areas so the blue-and-white tones don't appear overly dim. This time, the makeup heavily emphasized the blending of blush and eyeshadow, which, matched with the light blue hair, made the complexion look much more vibrant before the lens. Portraying a character like Rem is universally familiar, yet injecting different thematic elements each time—such as the cat ears and tail this time—sparks an entirely distinct chemical reaction. It shifts away from the standard quiet maid state, infusing a bit more agility and playful laziness instead.
Shooting Convention photos truly tests the tacit coordination with the photographer; sometimes a single pose requires tweaking back and forth a few times to lock down the optimal angle. I am thoroughly satisfied with both composition and color across these two photos, as they faithfully document the garment's state within the exhibition environment. The convention atmosphere always feels wonderfully relaxing, and running into numerous friends who share a passion for the same works to chat about costume craftsmanship and character interpretation is an exceptionally delightful experience.
