This time at the Qingdao beach, we ran into consecutive overcast days, meaning we completely missed out on the fine weather of sunny sands. However, the sea surface under cloudy skies carries a unique gray-toned ambience. The cold-feeling wind blowing through my hair strands actually paired beautifully with the style of this shoot. Standing on the reefs in this purple-and-white outfit, the sea breeze was truly ferocious, sending both the wig and the dress hem fluttering in the wind. Although it was hard to stand firm against the wind while shooting, once I leaned against the reefs to find a good center of gravity, it coordinated with the rhythm of the waves crashing on the rocks, letting us capture many highly cinematic expressions and postures.
When preparing the props, I specially selected fresh flowers. Although the sea breeze blew the bouquet a bit messy, this kind of naturally growing randomness is quite nice. Sitting on a large rock holding the bouquet and extending an arm toward the lens felt like greeting someone who came to the beach. The reef surface was very rough, requiring extreme attention to balance when stepping barefoot, but this authentic tactile sensation turns out much more natural and vivid in photos than studio shoots. This experience of Qingdao travel photography was quite unforgettable; despite the overcast and cloudy weather failing to yield the anticipated sunset and evening glow, the low-saturation gray-and-white backdrop conversely made this Elysia outfit stand out brightly in the frame. We were constantly searching for suitable angles among the reefs, aiming both to avoid large blocks of dark corner shadows and to let the distant sea horizon become a vast accompaniment. To capture stretched-out actions, we adjusted back and forth many times, and I am highly satisfied with the atmosphere of the final photos, feeling that the cool yet slightly romantic aura has been beautifully preserved.
As someone who passionately loves producing finished anime cosplay photosets in real-life settings, bringing the costume and props to the seaside this time indeed consumed a lot of energy. Every time we do an outdoor location shoot, we encounter different challenges, such as constantly shifting tides, relentless cold winds, and terrain that isn't easy to navigate. Yet, it is precisely these authentically existing environmental elements that can grant characters in flat photographs more vitality. Without gorgeous lighting, there is only the soft texture bestowed by natural light, which, combined with the seaside's airy presence, gives me many fresh inspirations for travel photography. If there is an opportunity in the future, I still want to take different characters to more distinct natural scenes to experiment. This brief Qingdao trip brought back a segment of quiet yet unique creative memories for this seaside cosplay endeavor.
