The set of Rei Ayanami convention photos taken yesterday at the 2.21 au venue is finally sorted! The venue itself has great high ceilings, which, combined with the circular spotlights at the top, creates a very crisp, cool, and slightly cybernetic atmosphere that fits the tone of Neon Genesis Evangelion surprisingly well.
For outfit coordination, I chose a gray ribbed halter backless sweater, paired with a slightly blue-toned patchwork jacket and fluffy white plush arm sleeves. To balance the softness of the sweater, eye-catching red leather straps and silver metal chains were added, enriching the overall layers and aligning better with the character's cool yet mechanically textured aura in this Anime outfit design. The lower half features micro denim shorts with lace trim; wearing this design—which merges everyday practicality with anime-style deconstruction—really puts lighting to the test. Fortunately, the lighting on site didn't wash out the makeup, leaving the red eyeshadow and catchlights in the eye color restored impeccably. The short silver wig possessed an almost translucent texture under the strobe flash.
To keep the photos from feeling monotonous, I discussed several poses representing different moods with the photographer. In one looking-back shot, the goal was to highlight the line of the open back and shoulder-to-neck proportions. The full-body hands-on-hips pose incorporated a bit of smoke effect to heighten the atmosphere, though the smoke-free version actually makes the costume's tailoring and materials clearer to see. The final half-body set holding a matching-color plush doll was meant to convey a quieter state, with the X-stitched eye details on the plush serving as a subtle highlight. Because the anime convention venue was quite cluttered, we experimented with a wide aperture to blur out the surrounding crowd and venue frameworks, focusing the visual center completely on the vividly contrasted outfit and character expressions.
The original post description referenced the iconic line "Life is the beginning of death, and death is the continuation of life." I've always felt that this character's charm lies in that paradoxical balance—seemingly devoid of emotion, yet filled with existentialist philosophical meaning. So during the shoot, I tried my best to capture a look in the eyes that felt neither eager to please the camera nor overly distant, but rather carried a gentle sense of detachment. Since it was indeed cold on the day of the shoot, the draft inside the venue made the plush sleeves look even fluffier and more realistic, which was a pleasant little surprise for a winter convention photo set. Throughout the retouching process, we aimed to preserve the costume's true colors without ruining the natural play of light and shadow, hoping this photo set can convey some of the character's serene yet resilient energy beyond its cool-toned aesthetic.
