This collaborative TFP session for Rei Ayanami's plugsuit was staged in an abandoned factory. The rugged, weathered grit of industrial ruins set against the glossy finish of the plugsuit generated an exceptionally stark contrast. Slipping into this patent-finish bodysuit in real life is surprisingly grueling: the fabric possesses zero stretch, clinging tightly with negligible breathability. Bending over or attempting wider movements strains the seams immediately, so I spent the early stretch of the shoot constantly realigning the seamlines to prevent odd wrinkling from distorting the silhouette on camera.
For weaponry, I wielded a colossal black-and-red scythe with a haft significantly heavier than anticipated. To fully carve the blade's sweeping curve into the composition, my arms and wrists had to remain suspended under continuous isometric tension, leaving my biceps trembling after just a few sequences. The kneeling poses were particularly demanding: grounding the very tip of the blade against the concrete made balance tenuous, relying heavily on core engagement to keep my body from swaying. To ensure the crimson haft caught the natural sunlight with a striking, radiant gleam, I constantly dialed in subtle adjustments to my grip angle.
Lighting stood as the cornerstone of this production. Slanted afternoon sunlight beamed through broken window frames, raking across the patent leather to sculpt razor-sharp rim lights. High-specular textiles place immense demands on lighting setups; the slightest angle error risks blown highlights and flattened facial contours. The photographer experimented extensively with exposure balancing, yielding final frames with buttery, organic transitions between specular peaks and deep shadows—preserving the mechanical edge of the plugsuit while sculpting facial dimensionality. To honor Rei Ayanami's tranquil, coolly detached aura, I held my expressions understated and restrained, drifting my gaze diagonally downward to minimize direct lens contact and cultivate a palpable sense of alienation.
A collaborative shoot offers far greater freedom to obsess over fine details compared to commercial assignments. We roamed through various industrial corners, testing directional lighting from side-rim illumination to overhead shafts repeatedly. Hair strands clinging to my face from sweat and static electricity actually added an organic, battle-worn authenticity, so rather than smoothing them away, I let them remain naturally in the frame. The sheer mesh panels spliced into the glossy leather formed rich textural contrast under backlight, while over-the-knee boots elongated the leg lines, complementing the stocking-like contours of the plugsuit.
The overall color palette leaned bold and intense: the red-and-black motif set against the dingy grey-yellow tones of the ruins generated tremendous visual tension. I chose this suit specifically for its angular, sharp tailoring, only to discover that the sharper the garment's contours, the more expansive bodily poses must be to support them. Given another opportunity, I would love to introduce atmospheric haze into the same space to explore multi-layered light refraction.
The wig was a pale blue short bob, layered carefully at the ends to avoid feeling stiff or blocky. Generous amounts of setting spray were applied to subdue artificial plastic sheen. For cosmetic contacts, I chose a reddish-pink palette that softened under direct daylight, perfectly evoking her inorganic, crystalline translucence. The base makeup remained pristine and clean, subduing blush to elevate facial structure. Stepping away for touch-ups between takes, the airtight garment trapped body heat completely, leaving me breathless with relief the moment it came off; yet seeing the finished frames across the monitor made every ounce of effort profoundly rewarding. Dialing in weapon grips, stress-testing lighting angles, and refining facial shadows—these meticulous fragments assembled into the final work. Ultimately, this shoot represented an intensive calibration of textile texture and environmental lighting, yielding results that thoroughly fulfilled our creative expectations.
