[Cartethyia Cosplay] Wandering Knight's Afternoon: Light, Shadow, and Negative Space by Wooden Fences

Carrying this Cartethyia costume to the shoot location, my photography partner and I spent an entire day working outdoors. For this location, we specifically picked an estate rich in lush vegetation, which happened to feature a small white chapel, rough wooden fences, a dried fountain pool, and a shallow stream. The authentic texture and natural light of real scenes evoke the Fantasy style character atmosphere far better than an indoor studio.

The structure of this costume was quite intricate. The inner black mini-skirt was adorned with white embroidery patterns, featuring crisscross front straps combined with metal buckles and thin chains. It took a lot of time to adjust the tightness during dressing to ensure the shoulder straps and chest pendants fitted snugly. The outer cloak was a light, semi-transparent sheer fabric, fading from white to sky blue, complemented by a few gold accent patterns that drifted naturally whenever the wind blew. To match the wandering knight's nimble setting, I skipped traditional stockings for the lower half, opting for bare legs paired with white strappy sandals instead. This approach felt very liberating when moving around on outdoor grass, naturally showcasing leg lines as well.

For the wig, I selected a soft flaxen gold shade with a smooth texture, adding braided details on both sides. Wearing elf ears cosplay helped sharpen the side contours of my face. The slender emblem in the center of the forehead and the red eye-corner blending served as specific identity accents in makeup, which, paired with a subtle dark dot beside the nose, added a touch of mystery in close-up shots. The blue thorn-like pattern on the headpiece matched the overall cool palette, complementing the natural green foliage behind.

During shooting, we split the session across several spots. When leaning against the wooden fence, resting my center of gravity on the rough timber, the photographer used the chapel background for a shallow depth of field blur, a composition that highlighted the character's expression and upper-body costume ornaments. The shot near the stream was taken sitting on a rock; reflections on the water's surface happened to cast onto my face, and catching the dynamic ripple movement felt deeply satisfying, infusing the frame with a crisp, refreshing vibe.

The set of poses by the fountain pool was the most relaxed part of the entire shoot. Sitting directly on the ground with legs naturally extended forward allowed the skirt hem to spread across the grass. This low-angle overhead shot showcased overall proportions and body extension remarkably well, with the white stone of the fountain and scattered flowers acting as foreground to set a soft, daylight tone for the picture. Because the gear was relatively light, both sitting and reclining poses easily achieved a naturally relaxed state.

The flower vine swing photo was a location discovered by accident later; the wooden board swing was draped in climbing vines and flowers. When sitting down, the sheer skirt draped naturally following gravity. Maintaining body balance while keeping a relaxed facial expression demanded tight coordination in shooting rhythm, but fortunately, we captured the right expression in a single take.

Looking back at the whole Outdoor photography session, the keeper rate exceeded expectations. Although outdoor light shifted quickly, we fortunately had abundant sunlight most of the time, bringing out both the wig's silky smoothness and the sheer dress's translucent texture. This cosplay experience reinforced my aesthetic preference for integrating Fantasy style characters into natural outdoor settings—the costume design loses its artificiality under natural light, appearing far more full of life. Every detail aligned with the character's setting of agility and mystery, leaving ample room for post-editing. As a complete character portrayal, it had its small regrets as well as pleasant surprises. For now, let's freeze this wandering knight on camera in the early summer forest.
