When shooting this Final Fantasy XIV Dragon girl cosplay outfit at Wuhan FFO, thanks to the coordination of the on-site lighting and the reflective floor, the final presented texture heavily resembled an Adventurer Plate portrait. Before the shoot, I spent quite a bit of time adjusting the position of the wig and accessories to ensure that the actual photo drop could faithfully replicate the effect in my mind.
Let's start with the clothing details. The main color palette of this combination is white and black, accented with golden metal chains. The white mini top hat on my head features a combination of black ribbons and white roses, with an extra layer of lace decoration added to increase the sense of layering. The sleeves are a detached puff-sleeve design, and the black leather buckles and golden ring clasps at the cuffs are crucial details that enhance the overall exquisiteness, giving me more room to play when posing. The blue badge and black ribbon on the chest, along with the interwoven cascading golden chain decorations, prevent the upper body from appearing too monotonous. The lower hem is a white fluffy tutu short skirt layered with ruffles, spliced with black elements, which visually tightens the waistline and elongates proportions. Paired with white over-the-knee socks and black thick-soled Mary Jane shoes, the overall styling carries both a doll-like cuteness and the magnificent temperament inherent to the FF14 Au Ra character setting.
Regarding makeup, I chose a light blonde wig to replicate the character's traits, paired with blue colored contacts and a pure white single eyepatch, making the unique character attributes instantly recognizable. The makeup was intentionally handled to be soft, clear, and translucent to avoid ruining the overall dreamy atmosphere. It needs to be clarified that for the 'dragon scales' element of the Dragon Girl in the original setting, it indeed wasn't 100% replicated. After all, in a real-life outfit, one must guarantee wearing comfort while considering the supportive structure of the clothing. Therefore, during production, I primarily grasped key feature points like the gaze, the eyepatch, and the costume color palette to lay down the character's charm.
Regarding the shooting environment, the venue layout for FFO Wuhan this time was highly dedicated. The entire scene was packed with blue-and-purple-toned flowers, with dense crystal light strings hanging overhead. To guarantee the frame's brightness and translucency, special thanks go to the photographer Boss GanLan and another big shot who lent us flashlights. They set up outdoor strobe lights and utilized the venue's reflective floor to successfully reflect the surrounding sea of flowers and the aura of the light strings entirely into the frame. Judging from the final photos, this high-key lighting paired with the bokeh light spots in the background created a highly pure and translucent fairy-tale feel.
Let's chat a bit about my feelings on the shooting day. Having played FF14 for a long time, players often mockingly refer to it as "Feifei" (Baboon), so seeing the configuration of this theme at the venue and being able to personally shoot a set of Cosplay convention photos made me incredibly happy. Although movement was quite restricted during the event due to the costume, and the skirt hem was both large and heavy, for the sake of beautiful photos, all this hard work was entirely worth it. Especially the reflection on that reflective floor in the photos truly looks like being inside some crystal palace.
This Wuhan FFO provided an incredible atmospheric feel. Although it's a bit of a pity that the dragon scales weren't complete, the completion of the overall outfit combined with the professional blessing of the photography big shots captured the exact temperament the character should have and the unique magnificence of the venue onto the film. It counts as leaving behind excellent memories during this Wuhan Comic Convention.
