This photo set documents a photoshoot I did cosplaying as Marisa from the Touhou Project protagonist duo alongside my Reimu partner (Reimu cosplay / Marisa cosplay). Because the plot revolves around Marisa getting caught and apologizing to Reimu, the expressions and body language in every shot needed to carry dramatic tension and strong narrative flair. I originally suggested doing a live acting performance in costume, which the photographer enthusiastically supported, as I needed to convey that aggrieved yet coquettish plea for Reimu's forgiveness. For the first shot, I had to grab Reimu's sleeve while locking eyes with her, tucking my chin slightly so the backlight hit my face to bring out the highlights in the makeup.
The shoot was packed with details. For example, to bring out Marisa's cute charm, I wore custom yellow contacts, applied bold eyeliner, swept blush across the cheeks, and added highlights to the nose and chin so facial features remained distinct under the wide hat's shadow. The wig was curled for dimensional volume; styling it beforehand took considerable time to ensure it wouldn't frizz under the sun. The skirt layered inside was heavy, and paired with black over-the-knee socks (Stockings), shooting outdoors in late summer / early autumn was quite stifling.
The second pose of bowing low to beg for mercy was surprisingly difficult. In addition to bowing my head, I had to prevent the hat from falling off while dropping my shoulders and shifting my entire center of gravity forward. Holding this posture for about five minutes left my back sore; the simpler an action appears, the more core strength it demands during shooting. The third pose acting cute was much easier—just resting a fist near the cheek and looking into the lens with wide eyes, which flatters the face shape. The lighting was stellar, with sunbeams filtering through leaves casting lovely dappled bokeh over the hair and dress.
Regarding composition, the photographer specifically instructed me not to just look forward, but to turn toward Reimu to keep dialogue and narrative continuity seamless. Delivering the final line—promising never to hit on other girls again—almost made me burst out laughing, while Reimu barely held back her laughter trying to act mad. Our chemistry evolved nicely through repeated interactions, and the final results fully met expectations. Post-processing mainly softened skin details without excessive alterations, preserving fabric textures and authentic tactile quality. Footing and positioning were also crucial; adjusting toe angles to maintain framing proportions prevented stiff, static poses. Many cosplay photos look rigid precisely because of neglected blocking and eyelines.
The Touhou Project protagonist duo holds immense significance for fans. Aiming for a fresh angle, we chose a comedic narrative theme built on character contrast: black-haired Reimu staying exasperated while blonde Marisa admits fault creates natural comedic effect. Though slightly dramatic, I immersed myself fully—practicing eye stability under the hat and even scraping my knees red for kneeling shots. Seeing the finished photos made every bit of effort worthwhile. That lazy afternoon under garden tree shades paired with vivid character interaction filled the frame with authentic life that studio shoots can hardly replicate. This was a thoroughly satisfying cosplay experience in costume details and emotional expression, and I'm deeply grateful for my Reimu partner's wonderful teamwork.
