Bringing this apothecary girl outfit to the San Su Shrine location shoot, the slate paths, bamboo forests, and blue-tiled buildings fit perfectly with the herb-gathering props like the woven bamboo basket in my hand. Shooting outdoors relies heavily on the day's lighting conditions; this time, the light filtered through the trees in the courtyard, forming vast areas of dappled light and shadow on the ground and lattice windows. Post-processing barely required much color grading to achieve a beautiful natural atmosphere.
The prepared props included a basket and this wooden slip written with text. Although the bamboo basket isn't heavy on its own, carrying it around the garden for a long time eventually brings a noticeable sense of weight. However, these physical items make the movements during the shoot much more natural, saving me from the awkwardness of not knowing how to pose with empty hands. The wig uses a greenish-blue tone, paired with a matching top and a red skirt; this color combination easily creates a color contrast in an environment of greenery and dark wooden structures. I chose a rather natural everyday makeup style without drawing particularly heavy eyeshadow, wanting to preserve the simple and rustic texture of the character gathering herbs as much as possible.
The shooting mainly took place around the stone bridge in the park and at the wooden railings of the pond. The one where I crouched on the stone steps shading my eyes from the sun was a dynamic moment captured during exploration; while the one leaning against the dark wooden window raising my arm mainly utilized the structural lines in the background to support the frame's sense of composition. Additionally, the close-up of holding the wooden slips perfectly coincided with the light spots filtering down from overhead; that warm light spilling from the gaps between bamboo leaves hitting the handwritten script looked quite excellent in texture. Since I've only processed the first batch of photos, I'm picking out a few images that I feel have comfortable lighting and a relaxed state to look at first.
The spatial layout of San Su Shrine is quite layered; there's no need to deliberately arrange shooting spots—every lattice window and every flight of long stone steps makes for an excellent outdoor vehicle. The fabric of the clothes worn this time swayed heavily at the hem when walking, which, combined with the red skirt and the small teal boots on my feet, offered a very different outdoor experience compared to wearing tight clothes normally. Before going out for the location shoot, I was worried about whether it would be hard to strike poses among those ancient building complexes, but when truly standing amidst those old wooden doors and stone railings, simply leaning against the railing or watching the water surface naturally fitted the frame. Passersby walked past during the shoot, but it completely didn't affect the goal of capturing slice-of-life photos.
The shooting mindset for this outdoor set leans toward recording a living state rather than crafting highly formal or strongly expressive forced poses. The light, costume colors, and environmental hues blend together, making the overall style appear quite relaxed. While shooting, I also took the opportunity to enjoy the serene atmosphere in this garden. Usually, there are many details in preparing hair, makeup, costumes, and props, but once truly on set, as long as these elements are well-matched and handed over to natural light, the resulting effect easily approaches an ideal state. Finishing this set has also given me more confidence to continue shooting the next set in this environment; an outdoor location where ancient style photography and a natural feel coexist is truly perfect for this outfit.
