Braving the midsummer heat of Shanghai to explore ChinaJoy, I brought only one body and one lens this time: the Sony A7M5 paired with the 24-70mm F2.8 GM2. I was initially worried that running around with camera gear in such hot weather would wear me out, but in practice, the lightweight advantage of this setup was remarkably evident. Weaving in and out of the venue halls all day, the strain on my shoulders was much lighter than expected, allowing me to focus more energy on the on-site cosplayers and intriguing booths.

The attendance at ChinaJoy this year was truly explosive with extreme crowd density; often, you simply couldn't find a fixed, perfect spot to compose shots slowly. This demanded exceptionally high shooting efficiency—frequently having to press the shutter the split second the feeling felt right. This is where the advantage of the Sony A7M5's approximately 33-megapixel high resolution shone completely. I took many full-body and wide environmental shots. Due to the bustling crowds, the initial compositions were inevitably loose, but relying on the high resolving power, secondary cropping and reframing on the computer in post maintained crisp and sharp image quality. Details such as facial hair, wig strand textures, and even costume zippers and accessories were clearly visible. This cropping flexibility is extraordinarily useful in chaotic convention environments, helping rescue compromised shots or average framing.

Another standout feature is the camera's AI-driven subject recognition and autofocus. Many cosplayers performed dynamic movements—such as jumping or spinning around with a backward glance—which often resulted in missed focus or motion blur on older cameras. With the Sony A7M5, however, once locked onto the subject's eyes or face, the focus tracked steadily as if glued on, regardless of how the cosplayer moved. Under high-contrast scenarios, it effectively protected highlight details from blowing out—such as keeping text on light boxes perfectly legible—while retaining abundant tonal gradations in deep shadows. Both facial shadows on the models and the subtle shadows of black outfits were rendered with rich texture and natural color fidelity. Even in backlit conditions, it balanced the lighting ratio between subjects and backgrounds seamlessly.

In the afternoon, we headed outside the halls to shoot another styling set, picking outdoor spots near the metal staircases and railings around the venue. Compared to complex indoor lighting, the outdoor natural light was bright, though avoiding harsh facial shadows under the afternoon sun posed an equal test to the sensor's latitude. Fortunately, whether in harsh midday light or deep shadows, the gear delivered accurate exposure with clean, transparent clarity. Because the heat was intense, the cosplayer began sweating shortly after standing outside in full wig and costume, holding a hefty blue prop gun while posing dynamically—truly dedicated and hardworking. Therefore, I made sure to trigger the shutter swiftly without unnecessary retakes, wrapping up quickly so the cosplayer could head back to cool down.

Overall, shooting ChinaJoy with the Sony A7M5 and 24-70mm F2.8 GM2 was an effortless, highly efficient day. With solid image quality, dependable autofocus, and wide dynamic range, it provided excellent mobility for run-and-gun shooting. Whether delivering an outdoor aesthetic under natural sunlight or handling complex indoor artificial light, it faithfully reproduced the on-site atmosphere.
