This dark Gothic style photoshoot has actually been in preparation for a long time. Ever since deciding on this Arknights cosplay theme, I kept thinking about how to fully bring out that cold, sacred, and slightly sorrowful vibe. The outfit is custom-made from multiple layers of black tulle and taffeta, with extensive lace and metal chain decorations at the collar and cuffs, plus a crucifix pendant—it's truly heavy. The wig features a mix of soft pink and silvery white, which, paired with light-colored contact lenses, gives an unrealistic, doll-like impression under the cool lighting.
The studio setup on the day of the shoot was incredibly supportive. White Roman columns and arches created a church-like space, while black and white drapes paired with white lilies and hydrangeas on the floor instantly maximized the ritualistic feel. Special thanks to the photographer, who used a contrasting cold and warm technique for this light and shadow photography—the background was a cool ice-blue light, while the bronze candlesticks and yellow candles in the foreground served as the only warm light source. That interplay of light and dark gave the frames a cinematic quality immediately.
We shot a lot of interactive sets today. Lying down in the sea of flowers with my eyes closed, it genuinely felt like being inside a very long dream. The sets featuring the vintage carved mirror frames are the ones I am most satisfied with. The two of us gazing at each other through the mirror misalignments created a visual tension intertwining symmetry and brokenness. Capturing the exact moment the skirt fluttered up was also quite exhausting, but we tried several times, and the final effect was incredibly ethereal.
The biggest challenge during the shoot was actually handling the weight of the black tulle and the height of the candlesticks, as we needed to maintain an elegant posture while ensuring the props didn't block our faces. Fortunately, my partner and I coordinated with perfect chemistry. The moment the two of us held the candlelight together and leaned against each other, an atmosphere of protection and serenity naturally flowed out.
This set of photos didn't require too much complex post-processing; the light and shadow and colors of the raw photos were already very unique. The cool-toned blue plus the warm yellow candlelight, combined with the black of the dress and the white flowers, made the entire color scheme unified and premium. I really love this style of shooting that relies on the scene, outfit, and lighting to create an atmosphere rather than relying on heavy post-editing.
To be honest, shooting a cosplay with a slightly heavy dark style theme is tiring, but every time I see myself in the final photos, I feel all the hard work was worth it. Every strap on the dress, every hair accessory during styling, and the placement of every single bouquet when setting up the scene were things we carefully built piece by piece with our hearts.
I hope this piece allows everyone to feel the devotion I poured into this look. A dark style isn't just about being cold and ruthless; it can also hold a sense of gentleness and eternity. Just like the candlelight and white flowers we arranged, even when surrounded by cold light, a spark of warmth is still burning.
This styling will continue to be refined in subsequent conventions and photoshoots. I am already looking forward to trying out richer settings next time.
