This set of Rei Ayanami cosplay convention photos was shot at the Chengdu Anime Convention (World Line). For the costume, I chose a dress-style blue halter-neck minidress; the fabric features subtle built-in shimmer that catches the light beautifully during night shoots. The mesh fabric and metallic chains on the top required considerable effort—especially the neck ornament and the silver coin embellishments across the chest, which easily snagged on strands of hair during dressing, taking half an hour in the backstage dressing area just to untangle.

For the Blue hair styling, the wig was trimmed into a bob with bangs, tinted in a muted greyish-blue shade, and dusted with highlighter powder for night photography. Makeup focused heavily on the eyes: red contact lenses paired with reddish-pink eyeshadow and softly blended outer corners. To faithfully capture the character's cool, detached presence from Neon Genesis Evangelion, the base makeup was set quite heavily; the convention day was rather sweltering, and I made sure to pack flat shoes in my bag.

The prop was a custom-made red double-pronged spear featuring a central helical twist. Although weight-reduction adjustments were made, holding it for long stretches still left my wrists aching, and the painted surface was prone to chipping, demanding utmost care each time I set it down. Most of the images are convention snapshots set against the outdoor night cityscape and bokeh orbs outside the venue. Finding proper light sources at night is tough, so the photographer brought two external lights to achieve this look. Long purple streamers trailed behind the dress; originally, I wanted to capture them fluttering in the wind, but with no breeze at night, we had to whip them manually, discarding several takes before catching a natural flutter.

Regarding posing, I feel that Rei Ayanami's greatest charm lies in commanding the spotlight simply by standing quietly. Therefore, I kept facial expressions restrained, relying primarily on eye contact and body posture to convey emotion. Leaning against the railings, looking back over my shoulder toward the lens, or holding the weapon with one hand—simpler poses suited the character's persona much better. The photographer guided me to rest my weight on one leg, tuck my chin slightly, and direct my gaze just below the lens to project that signature cool detachment.

At the convention, I ran into many fellow fans who recognized the character, and discussing Neon Genesis Evangelion lore and plotlines felt incredibly warm and welcoming. We primarily shot outdoors near the edge of the plaza, where the blurred background transformed city lights into dreamy bokeh. The skirt has numerous pleats, so walking around required vigilance to avoid stepping on the trailing hem, and because the dress was short, I made sure to wear black safety shorts underneath. Looking back at this Event photo delivery, the full day was exhausting yet exhilarating; chronicling beloved characters brings immense fulfillment, and I hope to encounter even more ideal lighting conditions next time.
