[Touhou Project] Japanese Fantasy Travel Photoshoot Under Cherry Blossom Trees by the Lake

The photos from this Touhou Project shoot are finally ready! On the day of our Japan travel photography, the Cherry blossom flowers happened to be in full bloom. The lakeside breeze blew petals everywhere, and the light was so soft it felt like a natural filter. Photographer rohirrim found this angle for us, where the interwoven branches and water surface in the background created a truly dreamy scene.

First, let me share the details of my own look. A lot of thought went into recreating the outfit accurately for this shoot. It took a long time to find the right fabric for the intricate woven and embroidered patterns on the jacket. The knotted cord accessories on the chest and waist were meticulously adjusted by hand to give them a strong 3D feel. The black-and-white double-colored tassels on the headpiece swayed lively in the gentle breeze. For the white wig, I specifically chose lightweight matte fibers to match the overall aura so it wouldn't look heavy. Although the small handheld prop seems inconspicuous, it was carefully weathered according to the original setting. Paired with a dark green skirt featuring black lace stitching, the overall color palette possessed a strong presence against the Cherry blossom backdrop without feeling jarring. The layered skirt hem was designed to spread out naturally when sitting, and the final results indeed met expectations.

My partner's styling provided a wonderful color complement to mine. Her light pink curly hair paired with an intricate headpiece accented with red and blue was visually eye-catching. The sheer light-blue tulle layer of her Japanese-style clothing was extremely light; the small blue butterfly decorations pinned onto it were added one by one over an hour before the shoot, specifically so they would appear to dance lively when the lakeside breeze swept by. The floral folding fan with a blue base in her hand served as a great foreground element and interactive prop during this shoot, adding a dynamic sense of ritual to the static framing.

For this Japan travel photography trip, we actually scouted several locations beforehand. We ultimately chose this lakeside area because the lighting was exceptionally suitable for a soft, gentle style. To wait for a relatively clean background, we waited under the trees for about half an hour to avoid occasional passing tourists. rohirrim was very meticulous about composition, repeatedly adjusting our sitting angles to ensure our figures weren't pushed to the edges of the frame. Everyone was fully immersed throughout the shoot; although wearing these multi-layered, ornate outfits felt somewhat stuffy and my knees got stiff from maintaining a pose on the dirt slope for so long, seeing the camera viewfinder made it all worthwhile.

We didn't apply drastic color grading in post-processing, relying more on the natural shifts of daylight. The sky's gradient from pale blue to subtle pink, combined with the calm, deep water surface, allowed the overall image to retain a sense of clarity despite our elaborate styling. This fusion of Japanese minimalism and intricate Japanese-style clothing is precisely what makes the Touhou Project series so appealing. The interaction with my partner was naturally synchronized; without needing many words, we easily brought out that desired relaxed state. Walking along the lake after the shoot with the cool evening breeze bringing the fresh scent of vegetation, I still clearly remember that comfortable feeling. This trip yielded not only great cosplay photos but also a truly delightful travel memory.
