Preparing this Marisa shoot took a long time, with substantial effort poured into everything from garment pattern drafting to prop detailing. The overarching concept embraced the Black and white phantom thieves theme, utilizing an ornate Lolita gown in a black foundation trimmed with white lace. The upper half features a black capelet outerwear accented with star motifs and bows, layered over a ruffled high-collar blouse. A brown leather belt fitted with a metal buckle was specifically added around the waist to cinch the silhouette, paired below with a white pleated mini skirt. The exaggerated wide-brimmed witch hat serves as the visual centerpiece—primarily black with abundant, intricate white lace and ruffled frills along the brim, featuring interior star patterns echoing the theme. Golden twin braids represent Marisa's signature hairstyle, which, combined with doll-like makeup, faithfully recreated the character's lively dynamism.
Regarding props, the broom was undeniably the soul of the look. To keep it from looking plain, I wrapped artificial vines and blossoms around the wooden handle and hung a vintage lantern that actually lights up, enhancing the magical ambiance within the white studio setting. For footwear, I intentionally selected white Stockings with crisscross black strappy detailing, paired with black Mary Jane shoes, beautifully flattering the leg lines.
To complement different compositions, we explored various poses during the shoot. Perching on the broom to simulate floating required tightening my core to look light and effortless, while preserving the voluminous fluff of the skirt and capelet. While standing holding the broom, spreading the cape allowed the long black ribbons to flutter downward, infusing dynamic tension into the frame. The studio lighting was delightfully even, and collaborating with the photographer was seamless. We laid out expansive green faux-moss mats across the floor, styling the left side with artificial trees, antique metal lanterns, and stacks of books. The book spines were intentionally curated with familiar foreign titles, while the right side displayed a red-and-white checkered picnic basket, red apples, carrots, and potted blooms. This kept the frame from feeling empty, evoking a fusion of Alice in Wonderland and an enchanted forest.
Before the lens, I paid close attention to where my gaze landed, striving for a serene yet subtly ethereal aura, with hands interacting naturally with the broom, the hat brim, or the skirt hem. Spreading the cape required gentle arm control to avoid stiffness. From fabric texture to prop craftsmanship, this shoot completely met my expectations. Bringing Marisa from Touhou Project to life under this Black and white phantom thieves aesthetic was an immensely rewarding feat. Every shutter click felt like a tangible expression of my understanding of the character. Everyone was fully immersed, and the final results are deeply satisfying.
