[Mayano Top Gun cosplay] Uma Musume Pretty Derby: Christmas Eve with Trainer-san

Shooting this set of Mayano Top Gun cosplay photos was a genuinely fun experience. Since the theme was Christmas, preparing the costume and props beforehand took considerable effort. The red velvet dress with white plush trim looked incredibly textured under the studio lights, and the red diamond-quilted design flattered the silhouette nicely. The white fur collar was not only soft but also beautifully accented the neckline. Keeping the character's personality in mind, I maintained a lightweight feel in the makeup, which, paired with the animal ears, brought out an energetic vibe.

The first photo is seated on a blanket-covered sofa with legs crossed and extended, effectively showcasing the length of the White stockings and leg lines while a naturally relaxed gaze simulated the character's playful look toward Trainer-san. The second photo is kneeling on the rug holding a star wand, leaning slightly forward; with the Christmas tree on the side, this angle enriched the lighting depth of the composition. The collage and single shots that followed captured candid moments from various angles—for instance, the fourth shot leaning sideways against the floor utilized the gingerbread man and green tree plush pillows. The vintage rug pattern and the large red Santa tapestry in the background brought out a rich festive holiday mood.

The photographer's technical control was spot-on. His concept of 'prep work' referred to unifying the visual style—setting skin and hair tones to a warm base during on-set lighting so excessive post-processing wouldn't be needed. To build an engaging character presence for Umamusume cosplay, I also tried combining classic anime poses with the physical set to find natural postures, such as holding a red-and-white candy cane or placing a finger against my cheek. These little gestures not only added interactivity but also brought the photos to life. The slouchy White stockings were another key element of this styling, flattering the calf lines and creating a classic red-and-white festive contrast with the dress.

Shooting a Christmas cosplay theme in the dead of winter means dealing with not just cold temperatures, but also accurately summoning the right emotions. Coordinating with numerous background elements required repeated angle adjustments to ensure props didn't steal the visual focus away from the character. During shooting, I constantly checked compositions with the photographer—ensuring the subject was centered in the first photo without feet clipping the edges, making it ideal for mobile cover display. I love the character's innocent yet mischievous charm, so I occasionally looked away from the lens or pretended to ponder. The overall atmosphere feels both warmly vibrant and serenely calm, offering strong contrast. I did my best to convey the feeling that Trainer-san was standing right behind the lens, using wandering gazes and relaxed hand gestures to fill the scene with narrative storytelling. Seeing the final results makes that day amidst plushies and gift boxes a truly cherished memory.
