"This dance is for you." For this Nilou cosplay shoot from Genshin Impact, a great deal of effort actually went into crafting and adjusting the costume details. The blue and white tulle of the top reveals a rich sense of layers under the lighting, and the gold and blue gemstone accessories underwent multiple material trials to match the original setting before being secured to their current effect. To complement this exotic charm, I selected high-heeled sandals with numerous gold straps to pair with the asymmetrical skirt hemline, allowing the lines of the legs to extend naturally in a sitting posture.
The layout of the shooting location was also of paramount importance. The deep blue circular mandala pattern tapestry in the background, paired with the fiery red and black totems beside it, beautifully set off the saturation of my hair color. The golden pearls and water jug props in the foreground, along with the interwoven cream-white sheer tulle, added a rich depth of field to the frame. This semi-veiled scene arrangement gave the image a sense of space without appearing cluttered. When posing with stretched and crossed legs in front of the lens, my core strength had to be controlled just right to allow the costume's tassels and sheer skirt to present a dynamic, lightweight sense of frozen suspension. As for the makeup, the blue-green colored contacts and soft eye makeup enhanced the depth of the eyes, which, combined with the long red hair, shaped very soft facial contours under the lighting.
To capture this instant of agility during the shoot, I even had to rehearse the hand gestures several times beforehand so that the posture of my fingertips looked both natural and highly expressive. Though this costume is tedious, the sense of ritual the moment I put it on was immense. Throughout the process, quite a lot of effort went into deciding which set elements and props to keep or discard, ultimately settling on this richly textured style you see now. The red and blue color scheme appears exceptionally coordinated in this presentation, where the wrapping of the tulle and the exposure of the skin form a delicate balance—which is exactly the character tension I wished to express. For a character carrying such strong mythological or exotic dancer vibes, balancing relaxation and elegance in body language is highly critical. The entire shooting process was actually a massive challenge, as the placement of the clothing and the draping of the tulle would sometimes drift off due to excessively large movements, requiring repeated adjustments.
In this attempt, I paid special attention to the presentation of hand lines, since the character's movements are often accompanied by the dance of ribbons or light tulle. Although I didn't hold heavy props in my hands, the gently curved fingers and naturally upturned wrists could convey a soft yet powerful strength. Among the final prints this time, I prefer the composition of the first sitting posture, which both showcases the drape of the clothing and reveals the body curves through the leg strap design. In the second half-profile action, I would intentionally pay attention to the interaction between my gaze and the camera lens, coordinated with the scattered metallic accessories on the side of my ears, giving the static photos a touch of dynamic narrative. Since I started doing Genshin Impact fan work and engaging in cosplay, I have always been deeply fascinated by this process of reshaping established impressions in my mind through clothing, makeup, and scenery. This is not just about putting on clothes, but a secondary creation of the character's divine rhythm. This styling with red and blue color-blocking coupled with massive gold embellishments actually heavily tests the cooperation between the photographer and the lighting technician when reflecting light off the reflective materials. I'm very glad that the team cooperated with great chemistry this time, capturing the metallic luster of the skirt hemline edges and the translucent feel of the light tulle perfectly.
Before starting the shoot, just adjusting the leg bindings took nearly ten minutes to ensure they wouldn't appear skewed or uneven from multiple camera angles. The weight of the metal headpiece was also a factor to consider; while ensuring stability, it also had to avoid messing up the styling of the red hair. The final effect is a highly unified visual whole of hairstyle, makeup, and costume. Through this set of photos, I hope to let those who see them feel that kind of serenity and mystery on the character, as if dancing under the moonlight. Although we set up the scene indoors, we tried our best to recreate that dreamlike feeling of nature interwoven with fantasy from the original work through the combination of light, shadow, and color. The character's posture and temperament directly affect the tone of the final prints, and I would intentionally maintain that posture of slightly tilting up my head, appearing proud yet carrying a touch of charm. Although there was a certain amount of physical exertion throughout the entire shoot, the final visual color quality of the frame is the best reward for all the early preparations of my Genshin Impact daily life as part of the Genshin Impact Creator Incentive Program.
