This time, I challenged myself with a Touhou Project Patchouli cosplay centered around the theme of a witch's reading hours. Setting up the entire scene took a full afternoon. To be honest, Patchouli's Lolita-style gown is remarkably intricate. From the inner slip to the outer overcoat, tiers of layered lace and ruffled flounces carried substantial physical weight, yet adjusting that final fabric flower atop the bonnet in the mirror brought genuine satisfaction. Securing the wide-brimmed bonnet was quite a technical task; without bobby pin anchors, it relied solely on the inner elastic lining and clips clamped onto the wig mesh. Any wide movement would tilt it out of place, so I found myself subconsciously readjusting its angle throughout the session.

For the wig, I selected a purplish-gray tone styled with twin braids and blunt bangs. The fringe was curled slightly with a styling wand to introduce subtle, airy volume. Makeup focused heavily on capturing the soul of her gaze: I opted for contact lenses with a soft pinkish-purple luster, paired with deepened outer eye corners to evoke an aloof, pale, and subtly calculating presence shaped by years sequestered within the archives. To emphasize her scholarly persona, I prepared delicate wire-rimmed glasses; though left off in a few frames, putting them on instantly summoned the scholarly mood.

The shooting took place within an antique-styled interior. Towering bookshelves filled with dense, hardcover tomes framed the backdrop, anchored over intricate Persian carpets. To cultivate atmosphere, we staged kerosene lamps, a brass magnifying glass, and a gramophone. While lying prone across the rug for that specific frame, I cradled a thick, red leather-bound grimoire. While lounging prone looks tranquil and cozy, it actually strained my lower back and neck immensely. Balancing camera perspectives with the angle of the opened book kept my shoulders tightly tensed. Yet when photographer @夜空📷 called out as the lights settled, casting a warm amber glow across my face and paper pages, it felt as though I had truly stepped into the Great Library of the Scarlet Devil Mansion.

Another shot featured me seated with the magnifying glass. To complement the prop, I continually fine-tuned my wrist angle to prevent the glass lens from blocking key light or casting harsh glare. A gramophone sat beside me; it was a pity we couldn't play vinyl on set, which would have elevated the ambiance even further. The white lace-trimmed socks beneath the dress hem harmonized seamlessly with the ensemble, maintaining unified color harmony. Because the gown was quite long, sitting down demanded meticulous attention to spreading the skirt folds to reveal the delicate lace tiers, requiring cautious transitions between poses.

The trickiest part of the shoot was managing the books themselves. They had to be stacked in artful disarray while maintaining compositional balance. Each time I changed stances, I moved with extreme caution to avoid toppling nearby book piles. Brainstorming prop arrangements with Zhinv Liaozi—debating kerosene lamp placements and natural hand holds for the magnifying glass—consumed significant prep time. We even tested several lighting angles to capture the authentic glass texture and warm golden halo of the kerosene lamp.

I really adore the overarching color palette of this shoot: rich warm illumination bleeding through deep, moody shadows for a quintessential vintage charm. The tactile textures of both props and wardrobe translated cleanly before the lens. Though physically demanding, seeing the final images made every bit of effort profoundly worthwhile.
