This red and black photoset from the Shanghai Eggy Party autograph session is a shoot that I find highly commemorative. When I took on this project, I was thinking about how to utilize the on-site white column props and background to maximize the restoration of the character's flamboyant nature and costume details, rather than just staying on a surface-level replication for these convention photos.
Let's talk about the costume first. The red and black color-clashing is the main theme of the look. The lower hem of the top uses a bright red glossy material, which yields an excellent reflective texture under the studio or booth lights. The hollowed-out design at the chest matches the black horizontal lacing, overlapping layer upon layer to increase visual depth. A bright red ribbon design is added to the side of the waist; to ensure the ribbons could drape down naturally when sitting or turning my body, I repeatedly adjusted the angles of the ribbons several times before the shoot, striving to let them spread out naturally without needing to intentionally adjust them during shooting.
The black lace choker is the key to this outfit's accuracy. Although it is secured with an elastic band, it easily shifts out of place during walking or squatting/sitting. To keep it exactly in the right position, I had to temporarily clip several bobby pins at the back of my neck. The short black gloves on my hands are also very particular; the tailoring wraps snugly around the wrists, making the hand silhouette look very clean and sharp in photos. However, due to material limitations, finger flexibility is low. When posing, I needed to mindfully pay attention to the wrist stopping points and hand strength so it wouldn't look like it was stiffly resting there.
Of course, the most eye-catching accessories for this look, besides the wig, are the ultra-high heels with red platforms on my feet. This kind of footwear places high demands on the center of gravity in both standing and sitting postures. Especially when I had to sit on the white Roman column with one foot supporting on the ground and the other lifted, to prevent the leg muscles from showing unnatural squeezing, I exerted a lot of strength to pointe my toes, extending the visual line of the legs while maintaining a relaxed posture for the upper body. After finishing a set, it was indeed quite a burden on my calves.
The orange-gold twin-tail wig I chose has a very smooth hair texture. The bows tied on both sides combined with the red rose hair scrunchies injected a touch of sweetness into the overall sharp look, neutralizing the strong aggressiveness brought by the red patent leather material. The fit of the black eye patch also affects the overall temperament of the image. I intentionally hid the eye patch strap behind my bangs so it is almost invisible when shot from the front.
While shooting, I kept thinking of that quote representing this character's traits, "Anta baka?"—that subtle, slightly tsundere and confident demeanor. The autograph session venue was quite crowded, requiring me to invest emotion in a short time to quickly grasp that specific mood. Although the process was a bit hectic, the seamless cooperation with the photographer vastly increased the production efficiency of this photoset. In the final finished photos, the red glossy skirt hem, black stockings, and black gloves just formed a classic visual balance. For this specific shoot from Neon Genesis Evangelion, though it wasn't easy to produce, looking at the photoset's restoration level, I feel it has reached the expected outcome. When preparing the same character for the next convention, I might still make some micro-adjustments to the makeup; after all, the same character can present an entirely different feeling under different lighting conditions.
