For this Rei Ayanami cosplay look, I selected a light blue glossy halter off-the-shoulder dress. The design of this style is quite interesting—it bypasses the character's classic white plugsuit, turning instead toward a visual impression with a more relaxed, homey, or uniquely distinct feel. The short light blue hair was trimmed and layered by myself in advance. To capture her signature cool demeanor, I adjusted the curve of the bangs several times, achieving a thickness that frames the facial contours with casual precision. Looking at outfit details, the bow on the chest, dark ribbon accents, and draping sheer fabric add visual balance to the vibrant Blue-themed outfit ensemble. The translucent purplish-pink lace arm sleeves are a unique touch; incorporating this texture introduces a soft gentleness to a character otherwise styled with a sharper edge. Staying barefoot in front of the lens was something I strongly insisted on for this look; paired with the white round plush carpet, it brings out a clean, pure, and slightly isolated sense of solitude.
This shoot took place mostly in my own room, utilizing a fill light placed on the left to shape light across my face and body. Since I held my phone directly facing the mirror, using a large-aperture camera to blur out the background wasn't an option. This demanded that room furnishings remain as clean as possible; white curtains and neat storage shelves provided a perfectly clutter-free backdrop. In terms of posing, whether sitting naturally with legs crossed on a white chair or standing holding the phone in one hand, every pose aimed to emphasize body lines and the fluid motion of the dress hem. Before taking on this outfit, my understanding of the character leaned toward emotional tones, making the Mirror selfie format ideal for capturing a quiet, self-reflective state. Less formal than studio shoots, it allowed more creative freedom while revealing the real state behind the lens. Although mirror selfies mean the phone partially covers the face, not needing to consciously cater to the camera's gaze allowed me to relax completely into a natural posture.
Being a solo photoshoot, mastering lighting and managing reflections was a significant challenge. The angle and position of lighting determined the luster reflected by the fabric. The material this time resembled washed, distressed denim, which easily produced overexposed harsh highlights under strong light; thus, the left light source required diffusion. This highlighted body contours while preserving the skirt's subtle textures. The lace on the arms revealed faint skin tones under bright lighting, adding a beautifully semi-sheer quality that looked fantastic on set. Overall, this shoot comfortably recreated an ideal state I held in mind. Without flashy props, the composition relied mostly on the outfit's tailoring and character personality to sustain the visual narrative. If possible, treating this foundational combination of blue and white as a serene slice of time feels deeply rewarding in Anime cosplay.
