Putting on this Lolita fashion dress woven with light blue and pure white, and donning that iconic long curly pink wig, the Saigyouji Yuyuko cosplay photoshoot officially begins. The details of this outfit are incredibly rich; from the gorgeous ruffled large headpiece to the bowknots and tassels accentuating the waist, and further to the cascading lace skirt hem and lantern sleeves, every single part exudes elegance and dreaminess. Pairing white mid-calf socks with black Mary Jane shoes also neutralizes the complexity of the top, adding a playful layer. Meanwhile, the folding fan in my hand, interwoven with purple and pink, is the absolute soul prop of the entire look, beautifully helping me portray the character's ethereal temperament.
From styling the wig to adjusting the petticoat, the upfront preparation took over an hour. Especially that large headpiece adorned with multiple layers of lace; it required steel bobby pins to be fixed very securely to ensure stability when the wind blows or when turning my head, which is a fundamental skill that highly tests a cosplayer's patience. This shoot was intentionally chosen to take place in a cherry blossom grove at night, where the deep blue night sky and massive blooms of pink night cherry blossoms form an intensely cinematic background. To capture the magnificent sea of flowers effect, the photographer used a low-angle upward shoot, letting the massive cherry blossom canopy shroud over my head like an umbrella, which not only perfectly framed the figure but also avoided the cluttered ambient lighting around. Meanwhile, we used portable fill lights during the shoot, which is absolutely critical in night cherry blossom photography; it makes the facial makeup more three-dimensional while allowing the blue and white dress to look exceptionally bright and translucent against the cool-toned night sky.
In terms of action interpretation, I discarded the stiffness of intentionally forcing poses, attempting instead to use body language to blend into the flower-filled atmosphere at that time. For instance, the moment of standing on one leg while raising the folding fan showcases a light, free, and relaxed feeling; whereas lowering my eyes while touching a flower branch leans toward a quiet and slightly mysterious state. These attempts from different angles are aimed at allowing the frame to replicate Yuyuko's elusive, mysterious temperament in Touhou Project while presenting the character's elegance and vividness under this extremely exquisite Lolita fashion dress.
In photography, the combination of composition, light, shadow, and outfit always achieves twice the result with half the effort. The branch directions of this cherry blossom tree itself are absolutely perfect, forming a natural picture frame. When framing the shots, we utilized these low-hanging branches as much as possible to establish the 'night cherry blossom' theme, letting the patterns on the purple folding fan form a clever echo with the color of the pink-white petals. I specially experimented with several different ways of expression—encompassing the cheerfulness of holding the folding fan high, the tranquility of slightly turning my body to look into the distance, as well as the lively moments of standing on one foot. I hope to use this diverse combination of movement and stillness to give this photo set a richer sense of narrative.
Actually, every time I change into this gear, the biggest challenge isn't the costume itself, but rather how to find a fulcrum that aligns with the character's spirit in front of the lens. Although the shooting process required maintaining my head posture constantly to prevent the headpiece from tilting and walking carefully on the grass to avoid being tripped by the lace skirt hemline, the moment I saw the finished photos, all the hard work felt completely worth it. Looking back at this photo set, the pink sea of flowers set against the deep blue night sky, along with the blue and white Lolita fashion dotted within, this color combination itself naturally carries a dreamy art style. Cosplay is not just about replicating a character, but rather using one's own understanding to endow the character with vitality within a specific environment. This night cherry blossom themed shoot is a memorable, trans-dimensional Touhou Project experience for me in this Cosplay sharing.
