Took advantage of the pleasant weather during May Day on the outdoor lawn outside the Western China International Expo City at the Chengdu Worldline Animation and Comic Exhibition to shoot a set of Kasugano Sora convention photos.
The outfit for Kasugano Sora was curated entirely by myself. The wig featured crisp white straight twin-tails trimmed with full volume, pinned with black ribbon bow clips. Rather than the base foundation, the focal point of the makeup was definitely the eye styling: blending reddish-orange eyeshadow against the white wig and light-toned lenses grounded her visual presence, conjuring an aloof yet melancholic aesthetic. On top, I wore a cream-white long-sleeved blouse finished with a brown plaid turn-down collar and a black plush brooch at the neckline. Below, a matching brown plaid pleated mini skirt was paired with sheer Black stockings and patent leather loafers, creating a classic schoolgirl silhouette.
The lawn outside the expo center was expansive; despite the heavy holiday crowds, the perimeter remained relatively peaceful. The organic vibrancy of the grass offered a stark textural contrast to the dark urban architecture in the distance. I brought an inflatable sofa as a prop; when sitting, I opted for crossed legs to leverage the linear flow of the hemline and Black stockings, flattering leg contours naturally without feeling staged. Strong gusts caught the wig, allowing the lens to freeze natural kinetic moments.
The long-eared grey bunny plushie helped immensely with posing dynamics. From resting beside me on the sofa, to being cradled tightly against my chest while standing, to dangling loosely from its ears by my hands, the prop's placement guided the emotional evolution across frames. While standing, I leaned slightly forward with a distant, unfocused gaze, using the dangling plushie to evoke quiet loneliness and vulnerability.
Catching candid convention photos outside really tests a photographer's timing, as natural lighting cannot be controlled and backgrounds are notoriously cluttered. We lucked out with diffused overcast light that smoothed skin tones with crystalline clarity. Photographer Miao Dan explored diverse framing choices, utilizing a telephoto lens to compress the background, melting distant high-rises and the lake into buttery blur to isolate the subject cleanly. To ensure a solid hit rate, we drifted between varied lawn patches, testing multiple camera heights.
Reviewing the final set, the lush green grass, architectural grey, and Black stockings struck a crisp chromatic clash, and the color grading met my exact vision. The true charm of Cosplay convention photos lies in capturing a character's unscripted, authentic presence within a real-world convention setting. This May Day shoot at the Chengdu Worldline Animation and Comic Exhibition was a wonderful experience; immense thanks once again to Miao Dan for documenting these candid moments with such cinematic polish.
