When shooting this De Zeven Provinciën look, the first challenge was managing the glare on the green satin fabric. While the material naturally carries a premium luster, direct light easily causes blown-out highlights. I adjusted the key light to a side-backlight setup and used a reflector to soften the fill light. Because walking caused folds in the fabric to shift the highlight spots constantly, adjusting required immense patience—repeatedly altering the reflector's height until the transitions of light and shadow across the green dress looked even and smooth.
The styling focus was on hair, makeup, and props. The blonde wig tangled more easily than expected, requiring me to section the hair, curl and style it lock by lock, and secure it with setting spray. The green contacts were matched to the eye shadow tones, with eyeliner subtly winged upward. In line with the big sister character concept, blush was swept across the cheekbones to present an effortless, composed demeanor on camera rather than overt sweetness. The elf ears were a standout highlight: made from medical-grade silicone for an ultra-snug fit, anchored with specialized adhesive along the skin seam so they wouldn't detach when turning my head.
For shooting techniques, I used a mirror selfie composition, letting part of the foreground body frame the shot while using a wide aperture to blur the foreground completely, locking visual focus on the subject in the mirror. This technique can easily cause focus errors, so ensuring the eyes remained pin-sharp was crucial. The high slit of the skirt and chest lace were key focal points; in terms of posing, turning my torso slightly with an arm resting across helped accentuate chest and leg lines. With the high-slit cut easily revealing legs in motion, maintaining controlled steps and balanced core weight was necessary to preserve the skirt's natural drape.
Beneath the refracted highlights, the green silk shimmered with a soft glow—an outfit that truly tests one's silhouette. To embody the big sister vibe, I adjusted my posture, such as resting my head on one hand. After testing countless poses, a slight upward glance toward the lens best elongated the necklines. The solid backdrop wall and wooden mirror frame balanced the garment's vibrancy, keeping the composition refined.
Since this shoot emphasized a languid mood, the eye makeup blending prioritized depth more than usual, using matte eyeshadow to contour the eye sockets. The front bangs were styled meticulously to blend smoothly with the arc of the pointed ears. Wearing medical-grade silicone props got slightly stuffy in warm conditions, but enduring it was essential for the visual result.
Through multiple test shots, we finalized the camera position to utilize mirror perspective distortion to flatter leg length, making that specific frame ideal for the cover. Keeping the legs from looking stiff required balancing natural relaxation with tension. Although physically exhausting, this experience gave me fresh mastery over shooting high-sheen fabrics, delivering photos that fully matched expectations.
