[Ushiwakamaru cosplay] Fate/Grand Order: Full Record of the Dan-no-ura Eight-Boat Leap Shoot

For this Fate/Grand Order Ushiwakamaru cosplay shoot, my primary focus from the start was capturing the dynamic tension of this outfit. The details of this gear are remarkably intricate; to present authentic textures, early prep work in wig styling, costume tailoring, and prop crafting required meticulous attention. In particular, the headpiece—featuring the black cross and the massive braided sphere—was far heavier than anticipated, requiring immense patience to anchor securely without tilting. The gold-trimmed edging across the garment was also quite stiff, creating resistance during wide-range movements like drawing the blade or spinning around.

The daytime shoot took place in a traditional Japanese garden featuring cherry blossoms and stone pagodas, where the ambient lighting provided an ideal backdrop for Japanese garden photography. The photographer had an incredible sense of timing; to catch mid-air leaping poses, I jumped repeatedly, occasionally landing awkwardly on the sharp pebbles beside the pond which really stung my feet. Yet wearing white socks and bulky pom-pom shoes looked exceedingly harmonious on camera, with the Long socks outfit and costume cut flattering the leg lines to appear remarkably slender. Crouching on the rocks to draw the katana also tested core strength, as the skirt hem and billowing white sleeves flapped wildly in the air, requiring tight core balance to keep the composition stable. The shot swinging the sword beside the water produced gorgeous reflections—as the red-and-black skirt and purple balloon shorts flared through the air, the sharp, fierce aura of a legendary samurai emerged naturally.

The nighttime scenes carried a completely transformed mood. We utilized dedicated prop lights, casting the amber glow of the lantern across the face, juxtaposed against the deep blue night sky and cool-toned ground landscape lights to create an atmosphere that was both tense and serene. For the shots crossing the bridge with the lantern, having the light source so close to the face required careful control over reflection angles to avoid harsh shine. Swinging the sword under the cherry blossom tree at night, aided by a gentle breeze, captured that quiet, focused aesthetic to perfection.

The fabric of this costume is by no means lightweight—especially with the waist armor plates and oversized sleeves—making repeated leaps and rolls physically demanding. Though shooting in the summer heat was exhausting, these were necessary challenges to overcome to faithfully recreate the character's sharpness and swift agility. The entire collaborative process during this Cosplay photography shoot was delightful, and I am deeply grateful for the photographer's hard work. Bringing these dynamic moves to life just as envisioned made the final results truly satisfying. This photo set serves to document my journey embodying this warrior—a fulfilling process of self-challenge—and I look forward to tackling more high-action, dynamic cosplay themes in the future.
