[Alice Margatroid Cosplay] Touhou Project Winter Doll: A Seven-Colored Fairytale Inside a Crystal Ball

Within a custom-built physical crystal ball diorama, I completed this cosplay photoshoot centered around the Seven-Colored Puppeteer. To accurately represent the character of Alice Margatroid, I first styled the wig and makeup. The wavy blonde hair required proper setting so that, when paired with the hairpiece, it appeared fluffy rather than messy. This outfit is packed with details: the neckline, cuffs, skirt, and apron each feature delicate lace trimming and layered pleats. Putting on this attire and standing before the physical crystal ball instantly immersed me in the puppeteer's unique world.

The most challenging aspect of this shoot was setting up the snowscape on site. To complement the encapsulated feel of a crystal ball, the prop crew filled the inside of the transparent sphere with white artificial snow. Small ornaments and an adorable candy cane hung from the Christmas tree on the left. Beneath and alongside the tree were wooden miniature cottages and a white tower—these scaled-down landscapes made it feel like stepping into a pocket fairytale world. The gift box with a red cross in my hands served as the highlighted visual focal point of the photo, its red hue striking a delicate balance with the overall warm yellow tone of the frame.

During the shoot, we spent a long time inside the crystal ball. The interior space was actually quite limited, and once filled by the flared skirt, changing poses required extra caution to avoid knocking over the surrounding miniature props. The photos in this set record different emotional nuances. In one shot, sitting upright while holding the cross gift box with both hands presents a tranquil composure that preserves the doll's classical poise. Another shot uses a closed-eye, head-down angle, conveying a subtle melancholy or quiet prayer through subtle facial nuances; here, the contrast between light and shadow proved essential.

In another shot, I tilted my head up toward the light source. At that exact moment, natural sunlight or studio lighting penetrated the top of the sphere, creating mesmerizing lens flare and halos. This dreamlike aesthetic was precisely what I wanted to convey—a sense of isolation from the outside world paired with a yearning to touch the light. In the final shot, I instinctively raised my hand to touch the transparent dome above, as if trying to break through a boundary. This photo series is more than just a static display; I wanted to express the story sealed within the crystal ball through expression and gesture, where even subtle shifts in movement evoke completely distinct atmospheres.

Regarding the set design, lighting on site presented a massive challenge. Because the transparent sphere created heavy reflections and a noticeable mirror effect, the photographer needed to find precise angles to eliminate glares or turn reflections into visual assets. That hazy highlight glow was actually a happy accident after adjusting the lighting angle, doubling the cozy warmth of the winter theme. The primary body of the dress is white, adorned with intricate ruffles, while the inner skirt layers feature crepe fabric patterned in dark blue and pink accents. Combined with blonde hair and a pink-and-white lace hairpiece, it creates a striking high contrast on camera. The cross gift box is meticulously crafted, its red ribbons adding a bright pop of color to the frame.

Midway through the shoot, sitting inside a relatively sealed crystal ball for a prolonged period made the air somewhat stuffy. However, the surrounding artificial snow and miniature props kept me visually engaged, helping me forget the discomfort of the cramped space. I also noticed that when intense light penetrated the spherical glass, it cast beautiful shadows onto the floor and skirt layers. Leveraging these shadows allowed us to capture shots with rich texture. The photographer refrained from heavy post-processing, focusing primarily on color temperature adjustments so the entire image felt wrapped in warm light—evoking the cozy, magical ambiance peculiar to the Christmas season.

Toward the end of the shoot, I also experimented with half-body compositions, such as standing in front of a white wall backdrop holding the cross gift box, keeping the visual weight centered on the dress and props. These variations added richer visual dimensions to the overall work. For Alice, maintaining elegance and mystery is vital, so the makeup avoided heavy colors, leaning instead toward a translucent, soft texture that, together with blonde hair and blue lenses, approximated that doll-like aesthetic of her setting. The final atmosphere of this set aims to find a balance at the intersection of winter and dreamscapes. This photoshoot gave me a fresh understanding of the character—a puppeteer is not merely a controller, but in a sense a creator, much like this crystal ball, sealing away beautiful moments forever.
