When capturing Hifumi from Blue Archive, the atmosphere created by light and shadow always adds tremendous flavor to the frame. Today, I happened to choose a location in front of a European church-style building for an outdoor shoot, with sunlight pouring down perfectly to create beautiful lens flare and rim lighting across hair strands, the halo, and clothing edges, capturing this instant of radiance.
As for the makeup and styling combination, the overall vibe leans toward a sweet academy style. The loose white Sailor suit top matches the character's lively and dynamic temperament, while the dark pleated skirt features fine white lace edging and clover embroidery, offering exquisite details without feeling plain. For the lower body, I picked Black stockings—a classic black-and-white pairing that is a staple choice for many school-themed works. The Black stockings flatter leg lines beautifully while adding just the right touch of girlish charm. The black leather shoes on my feet are a highly versatile piece, maintaining high color consistency across the full outfit to look visually harmonious.
Regarding props, the yellow-glowing ring halo atop my head serves as the ultimate highlight. To make it levitate stably above my head, a specialized rig was required during shooting, while carefully avoiding rig visibility in frame. Under backlit conditions, the translucent halo glows from within, reflecting a warm sun-like yellow radiance—which is why the title mentions radiant sunlight. This feeling of carrying a built-in light effect feels truly magical, yielding fantastic results even with simple post-processing color grading.
To recreate the character's eye-catching long hair, styling this blonde twintail wig took considerable effort. The hair roots needed to be teased for volume to look natural when wearing black hair clips and yellow-and-white ribbons. The drape of the twintails also had to fall naturally, or they would look like stiff plastic blocks. Fortunately, after combing through this long wavy wig, shot under backlighting, the hair strands displayed a silky, smooth texture.
Posing design during shooting is also a crucial element of outdoor photography. I chose a pose with my back turned to the camera while glancing back over my shoulder, slightly lifting one leg backward. This movement created a dynamic sense of strolling and playfully looking back, breaking the stiffness of standing straight. The photographer captured this fleeting dynamic moment wonderfully. Lifting the leg also showcased the full silhouette of the Black stockings and shoes, enriching the compositional structure of the lower frame.
The European building in the background provided fantastic depth of field; the spired towers and carved window frames turned into soft color blocks under shallow depth of field processing, complementing the subject without stealing the spotlight. The white iron fence served as a visual guiding line, naturally drawing viewers' attention toward the main character in the center of the frame.
From a professional standpoint, utilizing backlighting in outdoor portrait photography greatly enhances emotional resonance. This photo set didn't rely on harsh fill lighting, but rather depended on natural light diffusion, preserving subtle gradient depth in shadow areas. This achieved beautiful rim light without blown-out highlights or lost details. For lively, playful characters like Hifumi, the warmth and effortless radiance filtering through natural sunlight fit the character lore seamlessly.
Overall, this was a remarkably smooth outdoor shooting experience. Keeping a relaxed mindset and focusing on photography itself—feeling the light and gentle breeze of that exact moment—often yields images that convey the purest emotion. Without chasing overly complex compositions, a clean, simple white top, black bottoms, and golden accents accurately communicate the character's radiant spirit.
