This shoot at Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo was such a satisfying experience for my Misaki cosplay. Since it was my first time trying this version, I put a lot of effort into the costume and makeup in advance. This modified Qipao cosplay dress, with its deep blue base and gold embroidery, had a standout texture under the venue's cool lighting. The fabric offered a nice drape, and the high-slit design created dramatic tension while moving and posing, though it also meant keeping my posture constantly in check to prevent accidental exposure. The striped outer cardigan slightly softened the formal feel of the qipao; wearing it slipped halfway off the shoulders kept the overall look dynamic while adding depth. To maintain the outfit's integrity in a crowded anime convention environment, I spent plenty of time test-wearing it at home and fine-tuned the fastening around the slit to ensure I could pose freely during the shoot.
For the wig, I chose a deep blueish-teal shade with large double buns and elongated sideburns on both sides. The styling structure was quite intricate, requiring plenty of hairnetting and hairspray to support the silhouette. The butterfly hair ornament on the side was the finishing touch, harmonizing with the overall color palette. Regarding makeup, blue contact lenses were essential. To emphasize that aloof yet mysterious vibe, the eye makeup mainly used pink-purple tones, accompanied by heavier blush; the photographer noted this lent a naturally cool, fair-skinned porcelain look on camera. For the base makeup, I went with a long-wearing formula, because no matter how strong the air conditioning was, the bustling crowds made it hot and stuffy, requiring constant touch-ups—setting powder and blotting sheets were indispensable.
The shoot was mainly set along the exhibition hall's concourses. The weekend crowd was massive, so to avoid a backdrop cluttered with visitors, we sought out spots near windows with prominent structural lines, using architectural perspectives to guide the visual focal point. For props, I used a white suitcase, which worked perfectly for poses involving stepping up or leaning against it, accentuating the lines of my legs in black stockings while letting the high-slit skirt drape naturally. In terms of posing, whether lifting the skirt hem for a backward glance or sitting perched on the suitcase, tight core control was essential; otherwise, the posture could easily appear slouchy. The black stockings paired with black Mary Jane shoes definitely made my feet ache after a full day of walking, but they were exceptionally slimming on camera and their texture complemented the outfit seamlessly. To capture elongated leg lines, I practiced weight distribution carefully—placing weight on the back foot while keeping the front foot pointed and perched on the suitcase to achieve better visual proportions.
Lighting was critical for this photo set. The expo lighting was rather harsh and chaotic, so I asked the photographer to utilize wide apertures and natural side-backlighting, which, combined with color grading, gave the frames a moody, blue-gray cinematic feel. For wide full-body shots, a wide-angle lens stretched leg proportions, while close-ups emphasized eye expressions and hand gestures, such as pulling at the collar with both hands or lightly touching the chin. The photographer was also skilled at mood direction; I only needed to relax my gaze and maintain that calm, aloof disposition. The shoot lasted around two hours with two short breaks, as heels and a form-fitting dress take quite a toll. Tiring as it was, seeing the finished shots on screen made all the prep work feel completely worthwhile.
Regarding costume details, I adore the collar and cuff design of this outfit. The mandarin stand collar makes the neckline look more slender, while the draped cardigan billows subtly with every step. At the convention, many fellow fans recognized this costume and came over to say hello—that kind of event atmosphere is truly wonderful.
