When shooting this Ruan Mei cosplay photoshoot, I deliberately focused the set design on the fusion of waterscape and yueqin elements.
To create the unique cool and elegant aura of Xianzhou, we specifically chose dark wooden furniture and scrolls with calligraphy as the background during the set design. The floor was covered with reflective film to simulate the shimmering reflections of the water surface, and then dotted with large faux lotus leaves and various lotuses, instantly bringing out that serene feeling of rippling water.
In terms of styling, this dress dominated by a blue and white color scheme perfectly matches the character's temperament. The metal ornaments on the chest and neckline add a touch of exquisite detail, while the outer translucent white tulle makes the overall look appear light and ethereal. The wavy patterns and small flower embellishments on the cuffs and hem make the outfit look like a walking ink painting. The short hairstyle paired with blue-green highlights and colored contact lenses highlights the character's lively feel without appearing overly heavy.
Props are also one of the souls of this photo set. That customized yueqin is not only rich in details but also carries some actual weight in hand. To strike a seemingly relaxed and casual pose actually requires stable exertion from the arms and core. Paired with the round fan featuring a landscape painting, it can also help extend the body lines during posing, making the composition look more complete.
This shoot was a very tacit collaboration with photographer @还不够安艺. Since there were many lotus leaves and water reflections in the scene, we chose a side-backlighting style to capture this sense of depth. This not only outlined the transparent silhouette of the white outer wrap but also created beautiful high-light spots on the water surface. When shooting the picture of lying and sitting on the small wooden bridge, we repeatedly adjusted the positions of the legs and arms to ensure the body extended fully without blocking the instrument, keeping the visual focus of the frame squarely on the character.
For expression control, I hoped to bring a touch of softness out of the cool demeanor. Since the character's lore mentions pastries, I subconsciously softened my expression a bit, trying my best to present a state that feels approachable but not overly enthusiastic. The switching between standing and sitting poses, along with the adjustment of the angles between the yueqin and the body—every single step of these overlapping details ultimately formed the current cosplay photoshoot effect.
Although shooting the entire set was quite physically demanding, seeing the final gentle and warm texture made me feel it was all worth it. From the early preparation of costumes and props to the control of light and shadow on site, and finally to the post-processing tone, every step was handled around the core of the character. I hope this cosplay photoshoot can convey that quiet strength of the character.
