Bringing Ruan Mei from Honkai: Star Rail to life in this shoot required considerable dedication during pre-production styling and prop fabrication. By design, Ruan Mei embodies an aloof, dignified elegance; to recreate this cool detachment, fabric textures and prop fidelity were of the utmost importance. For this deep navy skirt ensemble, I specifically sourced a jacquard fabric with subtle woven patterns, complemented by golden metallic trims that accentuated the dimensional layering of the silhouette. The top features a white off-the-shoulder lace bodice centered by a jade-green gem at the collar—subtle touches that truly radiate an understated yet exquisite finish under sculpted lighting.

For the hair, Ruan Mei's long black tresses are unmistakably iconic. I custom-ordered a wig cut with soft, sweeping curves, crowned with white lace floral hairpins and blue hair ornaments. The makeup emphasized structural clarity, utilizing reddish-brown eyeshadow and natural muted-pink lip tones to zero in on her signature detached, all-knowing gaze.

Regarding props, the traditional musical instrument in my hands served as the absolute visual anchor. The soundbox is finished in deep blue, which I meticulously rimmed with gold pigment to trace intricate filigree cutouts, tucking pastel-pink faux blossoms into the neck. On set, the photographer erected an expansive scenic installation featuring tiled eaves, wooden sliding doors, calligraphy gauze screens in the background, and an arresting giant moon prop. To add depth to the setting, we incorporated large lanterns draped with wisteria clusters alongside delicate stone lanterns.

Lighting-wise, we positioned a hard key light from the upper left, casting stark highlights and deep shadows across my silhouette and the white plush floor rug to evoke the tranquil nocturnal mood of resting beneath palace eaves. Every sitting stance and hand gesture was refined in close coordination with the photographer—especially the hand movements plucking the strings and the crossed-leg sitting posture, which had to honor her dignified poise while lending graceful linear aesthetics to the lens. The pearl anklet chains draped along my legs were also handmade by me to enrich the visual detail.

When viewing these photos, one might notice the precise placement of my gaze. To honor Ruan Mei's persona, I eschewed exaggerated expressions, leaning primarily into gently hooded eyes or an unreadable, steady gaze directly toward the lens. Midway through the takes, I repeatedly reset my posture so that the garment pleats, light transitions, hair strands, and floral blossoms remained impeccably aligned. Ultimately, from early wardrobe fabrication to on-set lighting calibration, our entire team worked tirelessly to harmonize with the character's core aesthetic. Translating her aloof aura into tangible physical portraiture was a deeply gratifying creative endeavor. The shoot's success owes everything to the photographer's mastery over light, and I hope this portrayal allows everyone to experience Ruan Mei's singular allure.
