[Umiri Yahata cosplay] Ave Mujica Dark Gothic Studio Shoot Diary

For this BanG Dream! Ave Mujica group cosplay photoshoot, my partner and I were responsible for the 'UmiNyamu' pairing of Umiri Yahata and Yutenji Nyamu. From makeup trials to the studio shoot, the entire process involved numerous adjustments. Umiri Yahata's light purple straight-bangs wig was a major focus; it required layered thinning during trimming, and I added a subtle pink gradient at the tips, which paired with smoky eye makeup and red lips to accentuate her aloof yet nonchalant demeanor. Wardrobe-wise, a black-and-white vertically striped top was paired with a pearl necklace, layered beneath a dark underbust corset, and finished on the bottom with shorts, red garter Stockings, and black platform boots—a look impeccably suited to the dark Gothic aesthetic. My partner, portraying Yutenji Nyamu, wore a sleek long black wig with teal-blue contacts, sporting a white dress shirt under a gold-embroidered black vest, a red velvet-textured coat draped across her shoulders, and a black choker around her neck, creating an aura both cool and dashing.

The studio lighting was exceptionally refined, with the photographer utilizing heavy rim lighting and side-backlighting. The light catching the hair created gorgeous contour halos that resonated beautifully with the weathered stone walls, vintage frames, and dark shelving in the background, maxing out the mysterious atmosphere. Our interactions during the shoot were constantly calibrated: in the sofa sequence, for example, I leaned back against a fur blanket with legs crossed while my partner leaned in close, trying to capture that subtle push-and-pull tension. In the kabedon-style wall-press shot, my partner rested an arm across my chest as I tilted my head slightly to meet her gaze; at such intimate proximity, we could even feel the rhythm of each other's breath. In another cut, I stood behind my partner with hands gently caressing her head and shoulders, looking down slightly to convey that nuanced interplay of control and surrender through body language. Reviewing the raw shots, everyone exclaimed over how intense and provocative the vibe was—that dark, ambiguous, yet dangerously alluring atmosphere was truly captured to perfection.

A duo cosplay shoot truly tests chemistry; controlling expressions, hand placements, and physical distance is paramount. To ensure dramatic tension in every frame, we tested multiple angles and poses. The inclusion of Stockings, leather gloves, and other detailed accessories undeniably elevated the overall persona. Preparing this set took roughly two weeks from initial planning to execution. Given Ave Mujica's distinctive worldbuilding, we devoted immense effort to studio set dressing, aiming to weave elements that echoed the band's aesthetic into the background, such as dark-toned glassware and vintage carvings. For makeup, because studio strobes tend to wash out colors, the base needed to be applied relatively thickly while remaining radiant before the camera. The eye makeup layered earthy neutrals with deep crimson, accentuating aegyo-sal highlights and outer corner shading to enhance facial bone structure under side lighting. Managing the wigs was equally essential; to achieve that smooth yet effortlessly disheveled finish on the purple wig, nearly half a can of hairspray was used.

Throughout the shoot, our communication with the photographer was constant. For instance, in the full-body sofa shot in Photo 3, I spent considerable time adjusting my seated angle to showcase the leg lines and texture of the Stockings, while keeping the upper body relaxed. My partner's attire featured intricate embroidery, so we intentionally positioned ourselves to allow light to illuminate those textures. When it came to physical contact, we were initially a bit reserved, but under the photographer's guidance, we gradually discovered that unique chemical spark between these two characters. The pressure of gloved fingers grazing bare skin, or the sudden pause when our gazes locked—these were sparks ignited spontaneously on set. The palpable tension in the finished photos came from countless trials and micro-adjustments. Overall, it was a thoroughly delightful and professional creative journey. We spent a fulfilling day in the studio, and the dark, evocative style we ultimately captured added a distinct splash of color to the entire group project.
