Planning this Saber Alter cosplay started a long time ago. The King's image in Fate/Grand Order has always been highly recognizable, and her "Alter" form carries a unique, unapproachable aura. I put a lot of effort into the studio set design, focusing on recreating the gorgeous yet melancholic Gothic style outfit seen in the game.
Regarding the costume, the structure of this royal blue dress is much more complex than it looks, especially the huge black bow on the back. It needs to have a crisp skeletal structure while maintaining a natural drape when turning. Black long gloves and thin black stockings are indispensable details of the overall look. Keeping the high contrast of black, blue, and white allows the character to immediately capture attention against the cool-toned background. I also specifically kept some messy bangs in the wig trim, and combined with elf-ear props and pale, cold-toned base makeup, I attempted to reinforce that non-human quality. The makeup emphasizes eyeshadow blending to highlight the sense of loneliness in her eyes, which keeps people at a distance.
The lighting on the day of the shoot was crucial. The gothic hollowed-out arched backdrop behind me emitted a strong ghostly blue light, which directly set the cold and stern tone for the entire photo set. Warm-colored faux-candle lights were added to the black iron birdcages on both sides, creating a cold and warm intersection that helped separate the character from the background during post-production.
As for props, the greatsword has a very authentic texture and feels heavy in the hand. When posing, it actually requires some strength support; otherwise, it's hard to maintain that commanding tension of holding the sword. I tried several sets of different compositions, such as standing, holding the sword, and looking back from the side; that angle showcases the dress's tailoring and back elements well. However, when selecting the cover, I chose the sitting angle. Sitting on the black carved throne with legs naturally crossed, right hand resting on the hilt—the blue dress and black stockings create a strong visual extension. The detail of being barefoot throughout the pre-shoot also adds a spontaneous sense of contrast.
From the prop setup to makeup and hair details, to that very moment the shutter clicked, this Saber Alter cosplay is one of the works I've put the most effort into recently. The Gothic style outfit combined with cold light concretizes the heaviness and aloofness belonging to the world of Fate/Grand Order. Although eye management and aura control took a lot of time, I feel it was all worth it after seeing the final results.
