This time, I'm bringing you a styling of Moria Ruruka from Detective Precure!. I've wanted to try this character for a long time because her costume design blends the sharpness of a detective with the sweet details of a young girl. Taking advantage of the clear weekend weather, I met up with a photographer for an outdoor photography session on the steps, aiming to recreate a daily yet slightly mysterious atmosphere.
Let's talk about the recreation of this outfit first. The gray-purple cape-style top is paired with a pure white oversized collar. The row of small purple buttons on the chest and the colorful pendant on the fine necklace, while not overly complex, are highly recognizable elements. Both the cuffs and the skirt hem feature white ruffles, giving it a light, layered feel when walking around. To fit the character, I specially prepared a light golden wig. The iconic curved ahoge on top of the head is the crowning touch, and combined with the black bow on the left side, it instantly brings up the character's spirit. I actually prepared two sets of props for my hands: one is that toy ice cream cone with a yellow handle and a red top, which has a wonderful clashing cuteness when held; the other is a purple toy weapon with mechanical lines and color accents, which, when held in a standing posture, instantly gives off the vibe of a detective stepping forward.
During the shoot, we actually encountered a few small challenges. Although the lighting on the outdoor steps was bright, the midday sun was too harsh, making it easy to cast uneven shadows on the face. Working together with the photographer, we chose a side-backlit camera position and used the geometric lines of the steps as a background, letting the light source fall from a diagonal angle. This not only preserved the softness of the facial contours but also formed a natural light-and-dark transition on the clothes. Daytime light is exceptionally suitable for this kind of cool-toned attire; the gray-purple color looks very translucent under the sun, and the white sections aren't prone to overexposing. For the few shots of sitting and eating ice cream, I adjusted my sitting pose, holding the ice cream prop with both hands and intentionally letting my gaze wander a bit to bring out the daily vibe of "spacing out while eating ice cream"; as for the standing shot holding the weapon, I slightly straightened my back and shifted my center of gravity forward, allowing the cape of the outfit to form a natural drape, which gives the frame more tension.
Choosing the steps as a scene was because the stairs themselves carry a rich narrative feel. The steps stretching downwards, paired with the guardrails and distant green trees, give a visual sense of being "on the way home from school" or a "daily patrol." Moreover, the layered structure of the staircase can separate the foreground and background spaces in the composition, preventing the figure from completely blending into the background. The small purple plush toy prop was casually placed on the steps next to me, adding a touch of slice-of-life realism, making the entire set of photos look less like a rigid studio shoot and more like the character genuinely resting in this world.
Having done many other types of roleplay before, my biggest takeaway from trying Moria Ruruka this time is that a "detective girl" setting heavily tests expression management. No exaggerated joys or sorrows are needed; just maintaining a natural, slightly curious, or tranquil state easily conveys the character's inner temperament. Therefore, I tried my best to relax my face, lifting my chin slightly to let the lens capture the most authentic moments. The angle of light and the handling of props were repeatedly tried back and forth before snapping these highly satisfying finished products.
In terms of post-processing, no costly fancy treatments were done. It primarily unified the overall color tones and slightly increased the brightness of the shadows so that the texture of the gray-purple fabric could be seen clearly, while keeping the white balance accurate to prevent the skin tone from appearing yellow. The white silk stockings were very prone to reflecting light and overexposing under intense illumination, so the highlights were deliberately dialed down to preserve the soft texture of the material itself. This photo set universally adopts a refreshing, bright, and natural cute style, hoping to convey the character's serious yet slightly innocent feeling.
Slipping into this outfit actually made it very easy to get into character. Walking on the stairs while holding the props, I genuinely couldn't help but imagine myself looking for some clues. Although the shooting time wasn't long, every photo was selected from an angle that best fits the character's atmosphere. This costume has a very strong sense of daily life, so after the shoot, it felt exceptionally warm and intimate, not feeling overly magnificent or distant at all.
As for the "mysterious ice-cream eating girl" mentioned in the title, it was just a relaxed way to summarize my state in this photo set—holding an ice cream prop, spacing out on the steps. This sense of contrast perfectly aligns with the character's daily personality. I hope everyone can feel Moria Ruruka's unique charm, which combines a detective's calmness with a young girl's purity, through these photos.
