For this gym uniform shoot of Shiroko Sunaookami, the focus was placed on capturing the character's state. Shiroko usually gives off a relatively calm and stoic vibe, but after putting on the gym uniform, combined with shorts and white stockings, more lively possibilities for actions can be unlocked. To highlight her slightly gap-moe attribute, I prepared a bear doll and a baguette as props, trying various holding actions in front of the lens in an attempt to manifest her slightly air-headed side in daily life.
In terms of equipment, this time we used the HASSELBLAD X2D 100C paired with the XCD 90V prime lens, along with a Broncolor lighting array for illumination. The high resolving power of the medium format demands extremely high texture restoration, so I made corresponding adjustments in styling and makeup. The wig was trimmed to be more form-fitting, and the eye makeup not only highlighted the blue pupils but also intentionally emphasized the layering of the eyeshadow to make the gaze more two-dimensional. The flat lighting produced by the Broncolor array was very soft without harsh shadows, which also allowed the material textures of the white t-shirt, dark blue athletic shorts, and white stockings to be rendered exceptionally well. The whole frame maintained a clear and clean effect, with a pure white seamless paper background leaving the visual focus entirely on the subject. The reflective effect of the pure white background is quite obvious, so we slightly lowered the light behind the subject to make the main character pop out more. The focal length of the XCD 90V lens is very appropriate; whether shooting half-body close-ups or full-body framing, there is no obvious distortion in the image.
I tried a few different ways of wearing the gym uniform jacket. Wearing it normally looks well-behaved, wearing it half-off draped at the elbows, or tying the jacket around the waist can all showcase a different athletic-style layering. Putting on that red backpack on the back added a sense of color pop to the frame. The four colors of white, blue, red, and black intertwine in the pure white background, perfectly matching the original visual style. The lighting setup for this shoot actually took a very long time to fine-tune, hoping to maintain fair skin tones while preserving the fabric wrinkle details of the white t-shirt.
In the design of body language, aside from regular standing poses, gestures like cat-paw waving, shading the eyes with a hand, and pointing at the lens were incorporated. Especially for the picture holding the bread, stacking the bread props created a wonderful sense of comedy. The sideways full-body shot was mainly to showcase leg lines; the wrapping feel of the white stockings paired with light and shadow contouring gave the otherwise youthful gym uniform a hint of slender visual effect. The addition of the bear doll and baguette was not only to enrich the framing elements, but more importantly to add a bit of storytelling to the static photos. While shooting the baguette group, to keep the bread from falling, my whole body was actually secretly exerting strength, fortunately the final effect was extremely playful and cute. The gym uniform can be said to be a very basic-style garment, but through different accessory combinations contrasted with the red backpack, the overall visual avoided monotony. During the shoot, to ensure that the armor and animal ear props wouldn't slip or reveal flaws, every angle was repeatedly confirmed. This set of photos maintained an authentic clean feel as much as possible in both early shooting and post-processing color grading, challenging some exaggerated actions rarely used before, which broadened my own cosplay expression boundaries. I hope to convey Shiroko's unique youthful aura through the images.
