Under the moody low-key atmosphere wrapped in night cherry blossoms, shooting this Genshin Impact Shenhe cosplay series demanded rigorous control over details throughout. During pre-production, I aligned storyboards with the photographer, aiming to combine a wide aperture with cool-toned dim lighting to blur the night blossoms' bokeh into the background, perfectly accentuating the character's aloof demeanor in this Low-key portrait.
During the shoot, the translucent oiled paper umbrella served as the core visual anchor of the frame. The umbrella ribs formed radial lines under the lens; to keep those lines from cutting across my face, we adjusted the umbrella's height and angle numerous times so that it formed a neat semicircular frame right behind me, keeping the composition grounded. Hand gestures were also rehearsed repeatedly—such as lightly folding hands together or letting fingertips hover gently in the air—all striving to embody that calm yet emotionally distant state. Because of the dim night light, side backlighting was cast to carve out the subject's silhouette, while carefully using a reflector to provide soft fill light on the face to prevent pure black shadows.
In terms of hair and makeup, the silver-white wig took the most effort. Since the bangs concealed one eye, the eye makeup on the visible eye had to be intensified, opting for a cool-toned pink-purple eyeshadow to complement the scene's color palette. The costume's white fabric easily catches harsh reflections in dim settings, requiring caution to avoid direct light and prevent overexposure. The long blue ribbons at the waist proved remarkably helpful during poses, adding dynamic momentum to make movements appear more ethereal.
Post-processing focused primarily on unifying the color tones, pulling down the background exposure while lifting shadow details so the cherry blossoms didn't appear flat or rigid. The color grading was kept balanced between blue-black and cool white, infusing a subtle air of mystique. Shooting on an early spring night was actually quite cold; to sustain that serene expression and prevent breath condensation from disturbing the hair and makeup, we seized snapshots whenever the wind calmed down. Though the process was physically demanding, seeing the final images made it thoroughly worthwhile. The collaboration with the photographer and retouching artist was seamless, with everyone perfectly tuned to the visual language we wished to convey. It was a truly fulfilling 2D Night cherry blossom photography creative experience.
