[Kurumi Tokisaki Cosplay] The Sweet Cat-Girl Vibe Captured with an 85mm Prime Lens

This 85mm prime lens I brought to the convention was definitely the right choice, especially the RF 85mm portrait lens (RF85 f/1.2). In the complex indoor lighting of the exhibition hall, it can truly shoot incredibly translucent and dreamy textures. Although this particular styling incorporates cat-ear and maid elements, the overall coordination still carries that signature playful charm.

The styling follows a black-and-white cat-ear maid look. The black twin-tails with straight bangs, paired with vibrant red eyes, are the absolute soul of the facial makeup. The large red bow and gold bell at the collar are highly eye-catching, perfectly breaking up the monotony of the black-and-white color scheme. The white puff-sleeve top is paired with a black ruffled skirt, featuring beautifully layered skirt folds, and complemented by black stockings adorned with red ribbon bows to visually elongate the leg lines.

The shooting environment was a crowded, large exhibition hall with a constantly cluttered background and countless cosplayers and onlookers walking by. This is where the wide aperture of the RF 85mm portrait lens (RF85 f/1.2) really shined. With the aperture wide open, the chaotic lights and crowds behind me melted into soft, beautiful round bokeh circles, cleanly separating the subject from the cluttered surroundings. Looking at this buttery-soft out-of-focus background in the viewfinder was an absolute joy.

Out of this set, I chose the second photo as my main feature because the mid-shot candid captured the most recognizable elements of the entire outfit. Leaning forward slightly while holding a tray, this pose gives the frame a stronger sense of connection, and the folds of the black stockings and skirt hem are displayed naturally. While the first full-body shot shows off the cut of the dress, the second one is much more dynamic, with the angles of the hands and body coordinating perfectly. The third close-up of a wink is also perfect for a social media avatar; combined with the side-backlight, the skin texture is beautifully preserved, and the red eyes look exceptionally translucent under the light.

In practice, this 85mm focal length is absolutely undefeated for portraits on both full-frame and crop sensors. However, in a crowded place like an anime convention, taking a few steps back to shoot a full-body photo is truly a challenge—your skirt hem or arms are constantly getting stepped on or bumped into by passersby. To find the best camera angles, besides dodging the crowds, you also have to constantly monitor the direction of the light. Fortunately, for this kind of convention photography, we discussed the desired style beforehand, so our coordination was incredibly efficient.

For post-processing, I didn't apply heavy skin smoothing or reshaping, mainly preserving the layers of the costume and the color contrast. The classic black-white-red color palette actually looks more sophisticated under the slightly warm lighting of the hall. For me, doing cosplay isn't just about wearing a costume, but finding a comfortable state where the character and I merge in front of the lens. Today, the wig didn't get frizzy as easily as before, and the black stockings didn't snag, leaving me highly satisfied with the overall completion. This set of sweet convention photos with a sweet vibe serves as a perfect conclusion to this convention trip. Every click of the shutter records the most authentic happiness of the moment.
