Getting straight to the point: this shoot features Patchouli Knowledge from Touhou Project. Everyone usually calls her Mukyu. According to lore, due to her delicate health, she is an indoor shut-in who rarely steps outside, so we conducted this shoot in a Vintage study packed almost to the brim with books.
Costume Preparation: This purple-and-white Lolita dress was specially prepared, featuring a voluminous petticoat and multi-layered lace trim. The wig is long purple hair with a gradient at the tips, paired with a white lace headdress. Before shooting, a flat iron was used to refine the curve of the hair ends so they wouldn't look messy in low-angle shots. The White stockings were a key element of the styling, echoing the white parts of the skirt hem and nicely brightening the visual focus of the lower half of the frame.
Shooting Process: The upside-down pose in the photos was actually captured while lying on a pile of books. The biggest challenge was controlling how the skirt draped downward; in an inverted position, gravity causes the entire skirt to fall, obstructing the leg lines. I had to tense my leg muscles firmly while gently parting the skirt by hand to achieve a natural spread in the frame. The grimoire prop in my hands was quite heavy, and holding it against my chest took considerable effort, leaving my wrists and neck aching after several takes. Furthermore, being surrounded by book stacks meant dealing with noticeable dust, which felt slightly suffocating while shooting, but the resulting texture was truly great. To create that suspended illusion, my legs had to stay straight with an ankle hooking onto a book, making pose adjustments trickier. It took plenty of practice beforehand to find a natural way to exert force.
Photography Details: The photographer used relatively hard light from the side, creating a striking contrast between the White stockings and my face against the pitch-black study backdrop, enhancing overall sharpness. Combined with the low-angle perspective, it provided a curious viewpoint of her reading upside down or daydreaming in a magical realm. This fits her fanon portrayal of being languid, introverted, and lost in the world of knowledge. Combining the elaborate tiers of the Lolita skirt, dark wooden bookshelves, and stark, cool lighting genuinely delivers a mysterious visual impact.
Regarding outfit choices, beyond the Lolita dress itself, considering the character is a magician who loves staying in the library, white stockings were selected to match. This choice not only flatters leg lines but also harmonizes with the extensive purple and white areas of the outfit. Looking at her original design, her everyday attire leans toward darker, cooler tones, making the purple long hair and this subtly purple-tinted dress a perfect pairing. Additionally, because reflectors were used during the shoot, the lighting was not just harsh light but also had soft fill illumination, allowing the light transition across the White stockings to look remarkably natural. The outfit had abundant details, and effort went into arranging the fabric folds, all to faithfully recreate her languid yet magical aura from secondary creations. This shoot was an engaging experience, allowing me to step into the role of such a unique character in Gensokyo.
