The planning for this shoot was to create a set of nautical style sailor suit portraits. The theme of the post is "Let's set sail together, Captain~", so the location for the entire set of photos was chosen on a yacht, and the outfit selected was a classic blue-and-white JK sailor suit paired with over-the-knee white stockings. To match the anime vibe, I also specially tied twin-tails and wore a white sailor cap.
Taking photos on a yacht is a completely different experience compared to shooting in a studio or on the streets. The first challenges faced were the sea breeze and the swaying of the boat, which added quite a bit of difficulty to posing. To present a refreshing Japanese aesthetic, the shooting time was set in the afternoon when thick clouds in the sky served as a natural softbox, avoiding intense midday direct light, making facial light and shadow much softer and giving the skin tone a translucent glow. The background features open waters and the distant city skyline; using a large aperture to slightly blur the background nicely accentuated the main subject.
In terms of outfit matching, this white short-sleeved sailor suit features a navy-blue sailor collar and neckerchief, with an agile pleated skirt design. The over-the-knee white stockings contrast with the dark loafers, visually elongating the leg lines nicely. In Photo 1, sitting on the yacht seat and reaching out my hand was meant to create an interactive feeling of inviting the viewer in front of the lens to board the ship and travel together. The salute pose in Photo 2 echoes the nautical theme. The shot leaning on the steering wheel was a candid capture during a break, carrying a subtle touch of laziness, with the light hitting the side profile offering great texture.
To showcase the white stockings and the overall styling, adjusting the poses took a lot of thought. In Photo 4, leaning back on the seat with both hands clasped above my head required core strength, but it nicely displayed the extension of the legs; with the subject positioned right in the center of the composition, the white stockings were extremely eye-catching in the frame. Photo 6 was taken standing on the deck with one foot resting on the edge of the hull, utilizing the boat's lines as visual guidance to capture a tall and slender body proportion.
The entire shooting process was very fun. Despite the sea breeze and rocking motion, combining elements like the yacht, white stockings, and sailor suit fit the Japanese and anime aesthetics perfectly. The dark brown retro loafers also matched well on the wooden deck. This set of photos didn't portray a specific character, but was purely about documenting and sharing this free and refreshing nautical style outfit. I hope this photo set lets everyone feel the crisp freshness of the ocean breeze.
