Today's shoot didn't involve setting up elaborate backdrops; it was just a few relaxed phone selfies taken in a dance practice studio. The little orange cat in the studio is named Little Orange and has an exceptionally docile temperament. When I first arrived, it was curled up in a corner, but once I put on the orange wig, blue contacts, and the iconic stage outfit with the bright yellow oversized bow, it seemed to sense the cheerful energy and trotted right over to rub against my feet.
Since I was portraying this energetic character from Love Live!, being surrounded by light, animals, and warm elements was essential. Getting these shots took quite some effort. The wig had generous volume and thick bangs, which could easily make the head look disproportionate without care. I spent about ten minutes in front of the mirror adjusting the sideburn curves and smoothing down the hair fibers. The blue contacts replicated the eye color accurately, making the gaze lively and clear—a crucial soul element of this character. For makeup, I toned down the eyeshadow shades and focused on a smooth eyeliner to keep the face clean and bright.
The studio's overhead lighting was cool-toned white, but hitting the orange-yellow hair, it created a gentle gilded glow, while the base makeup and highlights made the skin look translucent. I didn't apply heavy filters in post-processing, preserving the natural sunny texture to convey this casual cosplay everyday Japanese aesthetic.
Speaking of our furry friend, pet photography is a true test of patience and stamina. Although well-behaved, keeping an orange cat focused is tricky. I originally planned for it to sit on the textured white steps, but as I squatted down to position its paws, it kept burrowing into my arms instead. I simply picked it up, angled the camera slightly upward, and tilted my head so the orange hair strands cascaded down my shoulders. Its orange tabby stripes, black collar, and round eyes sparkled under the lights. Holding it, feeling the tangible weight in my arms and the soothing comfort of a living creature, was far more moving than posing with static props in this cute pet interaction.
Cosplaying energetic characters is physically demanding. You must keep your eyes bright and focused without showing fatigue, while maintaining open body language. Although this costume limited wide movements, holding the little kitten made the character's bold spirit feel tangible. During breaks, I teased it with cat treats; it nibbled attentively, resting its soft, furry paws on my arm.
To me, cosplay is far more than putting on a wig and costume to imitate an appearance—it is about experiencing those vivid, lifelike moments connected to her everyday world. The cat is real, the light is real, and sitting on the studio floor enjoying this wonderful fusion is genuinely delightful. Looking at this tilted-head selfie on my phone, it feels as though her world and ours shared a magical connection in that moment. Studios often feel coldly industrial, but today, with this high-saturation look and our little companion, the entire space softened, like two little suns radiating warmth together.
Throughout the shoot, I focused on making these daily photos feel narrative-rich, ditching wide-angle visual gimmicks to emphasize genuine emotion. Huge thanks to Little Orange for cooperating—not jumping away when the shutter clicked, and not swatting at me. Although shooting and retouching took the entire afternoon, seeing a photo brimming with life made all fatigue vanish. After all, for anyone who loves cosplay, capturing natural and vivid moments is the greatest joy.
