This time, Kiritani Haruka's makeup and styling focused heavily on the eye makeup and the treatment of the elf ears. As an idol in Project Sekai, Haruka's gaze needs to carry that resolute and confident radiance. Therefore, I put a lot of thought into the eye makeup, using grayish-blue contact lenses to echo the hair color, creating a clear puppy-eye effect (lower eyelid downward slope) and highlighting the aegyo-sal on the lower eyelid, along with distinct, individual false eyelashes, to enlarge the eyes in front of the lens while also bringing out a touch of two-dimensional refinement.
In terms of clothing, this stage outfit has a strong sense of design. The splicing of navy blue and white, coupled with gold trim—to highlight the three-dimensional texture in flat photos, the lighting direction during the shoot was crucial. The light blue high collar at the neckline and the cyan-blue crisscross ribbon are important details to restore the character design; I paid special attention to smoothness when wearing it to avoid looking bulky on camera. The outer white lapel and black sequin-spliced parts actually reflect light quite a bit in real settings, and paired with the light purple-blue background, they nicely make the main subject pop out from the background.
As for the headwear, the black hair accessory on the left with white feathers and cyan-blue ribbons added a lot of liveliness to the overall short hair styling. The wig's trimming was also adjusted a few times; the blunt bangs and the curves on both sides fitting the facial shape better flatter the face, making it look smaller. I purposely styled the wig with some layering so that it would look more natural and not stiff like a helmet.
In action design, I chose the pose with the index finger held vertically in front of the lips. This action, paired with a gaze looking straight into the lens, conveys a sense of control on stage as an idol and a hint of mystery. The slender feel of the fingertips was also casually showcased, matched with a light nude manicure so it wouldn't steal the focus from the facial makeup.
The elf ears are a small highlight of this styling. Adding them in two-dimensional cosplay can enhance the sense of fantasy. The color of the ears and skin tone transition as naturally as possible, and the edge processing is relatively meticulous; when shooting, turning the side slightly at an angle can capture the effect of the elf ears.
When shooting this set of photos, what actually took the most time was adjusting the mental state. Because Kiritani Haruka is a very hardworking and serious idol, the expression management couldn't be too lax; she needs to maintain a slight sense of stern dignity while remaining approachable. The lighting technician provided a relatively bright main light from the front, supplemented by soft light from the side, so the facial highlight spots were very clear, and the skin appeared very translucent.
Regarding the care of the costume, I'd like to talk a bit more. The design of this vest has many layers, and the collar of the inner light blue shirt needs to be stiff enough to support the outer collar. The gold trim is exquisite and will have a slight reflection under the lens, giving it a great texture. The ruffle design on the shoulders effectively increased the width of the shoulders, making the overall proportions look better. Before shooting, I purposely used an iron to flatten every layer of fabric so that it wouldn't look sloppy in front of the lens. The cuffs are also white with gold edges, with a clean and neat closing design; when lifting hands to make movements, the sense of lines is very strong.
The layering of the wig is also very important. In addition to the blunt bangs, the sideburns on both sides were also trimmed to a length fitting the jawline, which is actually a classic technique for flattering face shapes. The top of the head was teased up just a bit to break the flat wig feeling, giving it some airy texture. Although the back of the head is not visible, it was also tightened to avoid feeling top-heavy.
To make the eye makeup withstand close-ups, besides false eyelashes, I also used dark blue and gray eyeshadow to smudge the outer corners of the eyes, deepening the contours. The blush under the eyes was applied relatively lightly, mainly to brighten the complexion. The lip makeup used nude-pink lip gloss to add a sense of hydration without looking too dry. The overall makeup style focused mainly on being clean and translucent, with the emphasis placed on the eyes.
When portraying the character Kiritani Haruka, I kept recalling her appearance on stage in my mind. She holds herself to very high standards, so every action must be done to the best of her ability. When the fingers are placed near the lips, the strength of the joints and the direction of the fingertips are very particular. The nails were grown out slightly and styled with a nude French manicure, so that there are details without being overly flashy. The elf ears require a bit of shadow under front lighting to reflect a three-dimensional feel, so I deliberately applied a tiny bit of dark contouring on the inside of the ears.
The background for this set of photos was chosen to be a solid-colored light purple-blue; this color doesn't steal the show and can nicely set off the blue hair and clothing colors, forming a very crystal-clear two-dimensional color matching. Throughout the process, from makeup and hair to clothing details, down to the deliberation of actions and expressions, the hope was to fit the character's temperament as closely as possible. For cosplay, makeup and styling restoration is only one part; being able to convey the character's soulful state is what makes it even more interesting.
