Before picking up the camera, I actually pre-enacted this Ambience Synesthesia themed styling many times in my mind. When I put on the black-and-red gradient halter top and touched that white shawl with an extremely delicate plush texture, the unique temperament belonging to the character bit by bit became concrete. One of the focal points of the styling this time was the hairstyle; I made two iconic white twin buns with eye-catching red highlights on the edges. The sharp contrast between red and white can both echo the red and black elements on the costume and beautifully contour the face shape. I chose colored contact lenses with a slight reddish tint, paired with a bright lip makeup, wanting to present a slightly mysterious yet highly recognizable visual impression. The black leather collar around the neck is the crowning touch, injecting a bit of handsomeness and sharpness into the overall gentle and lazy outfit.
The tailoring of the costume is very interesting; the gradient treatment from black to dark reddish-brown on the upper body presents a highly premium texture under warm indoor light sources. The white faux fur shawl that originally covered the upper body not only provided actual warmth during the winter shoot but also visually added a lot of layering and luxury. Paired with simple black basic shorts, it can excellently highlight the leg lines. This time, I specially prepared a pair of black pointed red-bottom high heels. During the shooting process, depending on the scene requirements, I sometimes put them on to utilize the bright red of the soles to echo the red elements in the costume and highlight an upright posture; other times, I took off the shoes and stepped barefoot on the dark wooden floor to capture a more relaxed, homelike, and casual moment.
The backdrop for the shoot was also highly sophisticated. We chose a solid wood Luohan bed with strong classical Chinese elements, covered with a large area of white plush pads. In contrast, the person's red and black outfit appeared exceptionally eye-catching. Beside it, a uniquely shaped miniature bonsai was displayed on a Chinese wooden side table, with lush green pine trees paired with white porcelain vessels. Under the reflection of the circular flower-and-bird mural and lighting behind, the entire space seemed to be endowed with a serene barrier. When you place yourself in such an environment, your entire breathing rhythm will involuntarily slow down. This composed atmosphere actually forms a wonderful tension with the character's usual bouncy and energetic feeling, adding a bit of storytelling to this shoot instead.
During the shoot, we mainly relied on a single light with a softbox to create a soft rim light, which both preserved skin texture and perfectly outlined the gradient of the clothes and the texture of the plush. When striking different poses on the daybed, from the focus in my eyes when sitting upright to the spontaneity of resting my chin on one hand when lying on my side, every movement was an attempt to interpret that brief moment of leisure amidst a busy schedule. Although the shooting process was not easy, and maintaining specific postures often required the support of core strength, whenever I saw the camera playback presenting that lazy yet powerful state, I felt it was all completely worth it. I particularly love the posture in the fourth photo where I lie on my side with one hand supporting my chin, paired with the scene where the removed high heels are scattered, offering a bit of accidental sexiness as well as a sense of comfortable control.
When the final makeup and styling were completed, I chatted with the photographer for a bit and found that the way the light and shadow hit the red and white wig and the plush shawl indeed elevated the texture of this work to another level. I believe the charm of cosplay photography lies in telling a great story, even a static one, through the combination of costumes, makeup, props, and environment. This is not just a simple change of clothes, but completely immersing oneself into another aesthetic and atmospheric experience. This themed shoot allowed me to find a unique way of expression for this styling within this quiet little Chinese-style space, making the entire process feel extremely satisfying.
