I finally brought Vodyanitsa from Genshin Impact into reality. To restore her ethereal yet somewhat lonely singer temperament, the fabric of this costume was carefully chosen and picked over and over again during the preparation stage. The blue-and-white color-matched skirt hem uses a large amount of semi-transparent sheer gauze and chiffon, ensuring that when walking, there is that lightweight, flowing, breathing feel. The hidden patterns on the skirt hem are faintly visible under the sunlight, maximizing the details, while the front-short, back-long cut just manages to reveal the leg lines. Paired with open-toe strappy sandals on the feet, the overall look doesn't appear overly heavy, maintaining a certain level of comfort even when shooting outdoors. The strapless bodice design on the upper body, paired with white lace neck ornaments and exaggerated puffy sleeve covers on the arms, all closely fit the character's traits. To fix these sleeve covers well so that they maintain fluffiness without slipping during posing, quite a few small internal mechanism adjustments were made, which is also where a lot of thought went into making this set of photos. Although exclusive musical instrument props weren't brought this time, through the stretching of actions, I still wanted to do my best to convey that stage-like presence.
As for the wig, the turquoise double braided pigtails are actually quite difficult to manage. This color is very eye-catching, but under strong light, it tends to make the top of the head look flat, lacking three-dimensionality. I added hair padding to the top of the head, paired with white floral hair accessories, making the overall head styling look fuller while also better modifying the face shape. In terms of makeup, to highlight the liveliness of the gaze, the eyeshadow blending and eyeliner were intentionally intensified; the layering of the eye makeup is very important. The lipstick chose a soft yet unobtrusive shade, and the overall makeup maintained a clean and translucent texture, allowing skin texture to be better preserved during post-processing color grading.
The shooting location chose a corridor with a starry sky ceiling, where the deep blue ceiling matched with white Roman columns creates a serene sense of theater or temple, perfectly fitting Vodyanitsa's background setting. The weather that day was also very cooperative; the natural light of a sunny day streamed through the columns onto the body, making the light and shadow layering exceptionally rich. What satisfied me most about this shoot was the dynamic capture of the skirt hem. The wind was actually quite difficult to control; to get the arc of the fluttering sheer gauze just right, I walked back and forth in the corridor many times, cooperating with the photographer to adjust the frequency and amplitude of my steps. In that third picture showing the stepping moment, it just happened to capture the posture of the skirt hem flying backward significantly, which, combined with the crossed-hands posture, gave a strong sense of immersion as if softly chanting and walking toward the center of the stage.
I've always felt that Vodyanitsa is a character with a rich story. Her singing hides many emotions—that line 'if no one understands the song, I'd rather it never resounded' made me see her ultimate pursuit of music and her inner aloofness. When searching for this state in front of the lens, I tried my best to restrain my gaze a bit, reducing deliberate expressions and increasing the feeling of listening to myself, concentrating attention on the character's internal expression rather than merely striking poses. While sorting through these photos, looking at the starry sky on top of the corridor, that ethereal melody kept echoing in my mind. Materializing a two-dimensional character is a wonderful experience every single time, and through this process, I have gradually figured out the knack of lens expression, hoping this set of photos can convey the character's emotions. In the future, I will continue to refine my styling, makeup, and action expressiveness to bring more great works.
