Putting on this Astral Dress, I entered the character's state in the pre-arranged Japanese-style room. The preparation for this shoot lasted for a long time, and the set construction was highly meticulous, including wooden sliding doors, a dark screen with flower and bird patterns, white paper lanterns hanging from above, and wooden-framed floor lamps placed on the ground. Together, these elements cooperated to create a well-layered, warm, yet dim atmosphere of light and shadow. Touching the rough tatami beneath my feet, the authentic tactile sensation combined with the surrounding set allowed me to quickly immerse myself in the pre-set vibe.
Looking specifically at the design of this costume, it takes white as the primary color tone, blending elements of modified Japanese-style clothing. The upper body boldly adopts an off-the-shoulder structure, with black crisscross straps designed at the chest, which not only visually tightens the lines but also aligns with the overall aura of the look. The black waistband has a moderate width, adorned with dazzling golden rings and red tassels on the surface. This attention to detail gives it a more exquisite feel without losing overall harmony. The skirt hem on the lower body features an obvious red gradient; along with the movements of walking or sitting down, the soft fabric generates a highly natural sense of flow. Precisely due to the lightweight characteristics of the fabric, I had to repeatedly arrange the positions of the skirt hem and water sleeves during the shoot to ensure that the clothing silhouettes in every frame remained stretched and elegant, rather than messy.
The wig is also a crucial link in shaping the character's image. That pair of white horn headpieces with purplish-red decorations is highly eye-catching. Coupled with that signature perked-up ahoge and long pink twin-tails, the luster and layering of the hair strands underwent multiple calibrations before shooting started. To make the styling look like it has an authentic weight under the lens while maintaining a lightweight visual effect, special attention was paid to the balance of overall fluffiness during the hairstyling process.
The action concepts for the shoot primarily focused on a feeling of relaxation and serenity, hence choosing a posture of kneeling on the grass mat or leaning slightly to the side. The red spider lilies by my side and the red-and-white oil-paper umbrella resting nearby added a splash of brightness and mystery to this quietness. The white fox mask and black tea set on the low table added a narrative feel to this scene, as if this isn't just taking photos but enacting a state of life at a certain moment. To precisely match the dimly lit, warm environment on set, the makeup processing adopted a white matte base makeup combined with upturned black eyeliner to strengthen the coolness and tension in the gaze, while the lips were painted with highly moisturizing red lip gloss so the face wouldn't appear pale due to the dim environment.
In terms of photography techniques, the photographer very cleverly utilized the soft-light characteristics of the paper lanterns. Through a side-backlit arrangement of warm light lines, the character's facial contours appeared exceptionally three-dimensional at the edge where light and shadow intersect. The tone of dark style photography further filtered out redundant flare interferences, focusing all attention on the colors and the person herself. The uniqueness of this Astral Dress lies in its fusion of a decisive temperament and soft materials; the shooting process required organically combining the two.
To ensure the quality of the final finished photos, the model's own body language also needs to remain consistent with the rhythm of the environment. This creation served as an exercise for my personal expressiveness. Through constantly adjusting my demeanor and the amplitude of my limbs, the frame looks free of forced posing traces, revealing more of a natural emotional flow. Hopefully, through this record in light and shadow, everyone can feel the temperature and details within this Japanese-style photography scene, as well as the special atmospheric feel brought by the character herself.
