[Marisa Kirisame cosplay] Lanterns and Old Book Pages in the Night of Touhou Project

This photoset records fragmented moments of me as Marisa Kirisame cosplay in different scenes. Photographer @Demainidéeferaitsenrêves blended environmental light and shadow with the character to create a rich sense of Storytelling photography. Putting on this outfit, the first thing I noticed was the detailed texture: a large white lace ruffled brim hat paired with black gloves, golden hair braided into two long pigtails, establishing a Vintage portrait aesthetic instantly.

Throughout the shoot, prop utilization was central to this project. Lanterns, long swords, a red apple, and yellowed heavy books were key to shaping the overall atmosphere. To depict the character's quiet reflection or exploration at night, we built a wooden flower trellis scene outdoors. Warm yellow light strings stood out vividly against the cold night backdrop. The lantern's metallic texture reflected fine luster at the light-dark boundary. To capture the perspective of the lantern held overhead with light hitting my jawline and collarbone, I simply lay on the grass, achieving the angle via high-angle overhead shooting—a pose requiring considerable core strength.

Another set I deeply favor features a louver window and wooden table scene. With abundant afternoon sunlight, light grates slitted through window frames diagonally onto the tablecloth, apple, and gloves on my hands, creating a sharp yet gentle rim-backlight. Under that light, watching my fingertips press against the book's grain felt as though truly opening an ancient spellbook. The red apple served as a color breaker in the frame, forming a clear warm-and-cool contrast with white lace attire, preventing the image from feeling too cold in this Vintage portrait setup.

There was also a backlit shoot in front of old bookshelves. To capture the dynamic extension of legs and spatial tension in Stockings cosplay posing, I climbed onto a lower stool to reach high books while stretching my body fully. Though the studio was dark, side-backlighting outlined a sharp rim highlight around character edges, giving high-contrast drama. The high success rate of this photoset relies on capturing expressions. To align with the character, I kept my eyes calm and focused before the lens without exaggerated expressions, conveying an immersive atmosphere in my own world.

Overall, this was a deep exploration into environmental narrative within Cosplay photography. Instead of piling up complex props, we used simple objects like lanterns, books, and apples as visual anchors, stitching together sliced moments of the character's life using natural and artificial light. Though heavy garments and hard wooden props caused a few bumps and bruises, seeing final results made every effort worthwhile. I gradually realized that cosplay isn't just external restoration, but capturing atmosphere and emotion to make flat photos come alive—which is what I strive for in my works.
