These Convention photos from Firefly ACG Expo are finally organized! Pairing this classic red dress outfit immediately brings to mind the red-and-yellow color scheme of scrambled eggs with tomatoes. Many fellow fans shouted this meme right at the venue, which felt very warm and lively. Preparation for this appearance at the Guangzhou convention took quite a long time, especially trimming the wig and assembling that pair of crystal wings. When I first saw the wing design sketches, I anticipated they would carry some weight, and wearing them on-site required a bit of adaptation, but the final visual effect fully met expectations. As for props besides the wings, the brown teddy bear in my arms was an essential element that helped stabilize hand postures during shooting.
Lighting at comic convention venues can be quite chaotic, especially in transition areas between indoor and outdoor spots. Among the photos shared this time, I personally find the shot of standing on one leg especially vividly captured; the lifted skirt hem and colorful crystal wings display great layering under the lights. The crisp contrast between the White thigh-highs outfit and red platform shoes also helps elongate lower body proportions. As Convention photos, I didn't pursue excessive retouching, retaining ambient lighting textures so details stay closer to real life.
The photographer mostly scouted angles along venue steps or poolside edges. Especially toward dusk as ambient light softened, it highlighted the main red-and-white color scheme of the outfit even better. The crystal wings expanded my walking width, requiring extra care when moving through crowd areas to avoid bumping into passersby, so shooting mostly took place in relatively open spots. Standing on one leg actually demanded strong balance control, requiring me to stabilize my upper body's center of gravity while maintaining facial expression management.
Character designs in the Touhou Project series are renowned for rich details and unique aesthetics; for portraying Flandre Scarlet, outfit accuracy was paramount. The skirt hem features abundant white ruffles, which paired with a red corset and intricate chest accents look visually ornate and gorgeous. Sleeve cuffs adopt a lantern-sleeve structure complete with red cross patterns that maintain harmony with the overall palette. I intentionally styled the wig with fluffy curls so that upon wearing the mob cap, head proportions looked fuller without creating a small-head, broad-shoulder imbalance.
For makeup, focus was placed on coordinating eye makeup with lip color; red contact lenses inherently carry vibrant radiance, which, paired with pale base makeup, beautifully highlighted facial 3D contours under camera flashes. In close-up half-body shots, touching lips with fingers or slightly tilting my head toward the lens created a playful yet mysterious mood. Looking back at these photos—especially dynamic poses—the natural feel of movement turned out far better than stiff standing poses, benefiting from walking around and trying different shots at the convention floor.
This Firefly ACG Expo experience gave me deeper personal insights into the character. The classic red-and-white color palette combined with whimsical crystal wings forms a highly recognizable ensemble. A comic convention serves not only as a stage to showcase characters, but also as an opportunity to connect with fellow enthusiasts. Wearing this gear naturally makes one want to step into character—such as making subtle gestures while holding the teddy bear or slightly turning sideways while adjusting the skirt. Much of the charm in Convention photos lies in those candid moments captured by photographers.
Lighting is immensely important for this red dress outfit. Under direct bright light, the red fabric displays high color saturation, looking vibrant and eye-catching; whereas in dim, reddish ambient light, it merges with the ambient red glow to create a unique atmosphere, yielding quite distinctive photo colors. During post-processing, focus was kept on basic color grading and facial retouching without altering body proportions, aiming to preserve authentic personal characteristics.
Many friends asked about mobility while wearing this dress during conventions; in fact, once used to platform shoes, slowing one's pace slightly alongside a suitable petticoat doesn't hinder normal walking too much. However, due to balance issues with the crystal wings, constant mindfulness of left-right gravity shifts was necessary. Overall, the shooting experience at this Guangzhou convention was wonderful, working with great photographer synergy to capture these satisfying moments. I hope to keep refining makeup, props, and expressiveness in the future to bring more characters to life at upcoming conventions.
