[Marisa Kirisame Cosplay] Touhou Project's Halloween Night: Candlelight, Pumpkins, and Magic

When this set of Halloween-themed Marisa Kirisame cosplay photoshoot photos came out, I was actually quite deeply moved. Preparing for this project originally stemmed entirely from the autumn season and the rich magical atmosphere in Touhou Project—I wanted to try showcasing a Marisa Kirisame with more everyday, lived-in warmth surrounded by candlelight and pumpkins, rather than just staying within character tropes. Confirming props and scenes in early preparation went very smoothly. A huge thanks to @SanFenWangXiang for providing the costume, which relieved a lot of styling burden and allowed me to invest more energy into interacting with the studio set on site.

For this shoot, the venue chosen was @Studio No.81, a space with rich vintage depth that featured a lovely fireplace and dark wooden furniture. Paired with the pumpkins and numerous candles we brought along, that unique mysterious yet cozy Halloween vibe immediately came to life. To pursue the feeling of dining by candlelight in a magical world at night, photographer @ShuiWaTer-VON and I put a lot of effort into the lighting setup. Ambient light was dialed down very low, so the main light sources came directly from candlesticks, jack-o'-lanterns, and the firelight in the fireplace. The contrast between cool blue ambient tones and warm yellow candlelight that you see in the photos actually took a long time to calibrate on location. This alternating cool and warm color temperature perfectly highlighted Marisa's character tone—playful yet blending in a hint of languid ease.

Tabletop decor details were another highlight of this shoot. We prepared several real and LED candles, alongside sliced and plated strawberries, fruit, and various vintage-style small dishes. That tiny witch figure sitting on a plate in the photos is actually a collectible prop of my own; framing it alongside Marisa created a delightfully quirky dimensional contrast. Including the orange bow across the chest and the iconic oversized wizard hat, the textures looked exceptional in close-up shots. Choosing a static scene narrative instead of complex magical VFX actually fit the Halloween atmosphere far better—quiet, yet tingling with the prelude to a mischievous prank.

As a cosplayer, I always worry before shoots that I won't be in peak condition. But that day, because the overall studio set was so immersive, sitting before the cozy candlelight naturally put me at ease. Whether resting my chin in my hands looking into the camera, picking up a strawberry to eat, or pretending to interact with my reflection in the mirror, every movement flowed naturally with the comfortable, nocturnal magic in the air. Particularly when shooting the mirror scene, the photographer cleverly used the reflective mirror frame to deepen the visual depth and add narrative nuance, as if revealing another facet of Marisa. The makeup this time also added a touch of Halloween playfulness while retaining original character traits as much as possible, giving the final shots strong character fidelity alongside our own creative flavor.

For post-processing, ShuiWaTer-VON's skill was a massive help. He processed shadow details impeccably, preserving the rich cinematic mood of the scene without making the subject too dark. Texture under warm lights truly requires precise control over exposure and color. Collaborating with such an imaginative, highly capable photography team always elevates the Halloween cosplay experience significantly. I hope everyone scrolling through these photos can feel the cozy warmth of relaxing by a fireplace with magical books and a drink on a Halloween night, just as I did. As for portraying this character, I still have many ideas I want to try—this set is simply a slice-of-life vignette.
