[Shimoe Koharu Cosplay] Afternoon Reading Time on a Summer Overpass

As sunlight pierces through the railings onto the skirt hem, the clicking sound of the shutter at the exact moment of flipping through the prop book makes my heart skip a beat. This time I did a Shimoe Koharu cosplay from Blue Archive. The overall preparation took a very long time, striving for high accuracy from costume details to prop textures.

The lighting on the day of the shoot was much better than expected. We chose this pedestrian overpass in the downtown area for our overpass scene. The afternoon natural light spilled through the gaps in the leaves onto the white railings, creating a very soft light and shadow effect. The highlight of this outfit lies in the loose jacket and fitted tiny details. The black sailor-style jacket features a pink trim decoration, and the white sailor collar forms a wonderful visual contrast with the black choker on the neck, balancing vitality and docility as a whole. To better fit the character, I meticulously trimmed the long wavy wig for this session, making the layers of the bangs and sideburns look more natural. Combined with the light-colored contact lenses, it makes the gaze look much more translucent.

If I had to name the accessory that required the most thought, it would definitely be the head ornament. A massive pink ring emblem was added to the black beret, and the black feather tassels hanging from the side needed to be precisely secured in the right position to ensure they wouldn't block my face while maintaining a dynamic flow in the photos. Meanwhile, although the small black wings on the back are tiny in size, they add a three-dimensional depth and layering to the entire back. The prop book used this time was also specifically selected for its texture; the pattern design on the cover carries a vintage vibe, blending seamlessly into the frame whether flipped through in hand or used to half-hide my face.

In terms of framing, we tried several different poses. I am most satisfied with the photoshoot frames where I am sitting on the ground. The moment I held the book and looked up at the camera, the natural forward-leaning sitting posture perfectly showcased the contours of the loose white over-the-knee socks and the pink-purple pleated skirt. The layers created by the leg lines and the folded skirt hem, combined with the warm yellow halo of the side-backlighting, gave the image an amazing texture. Another styling of standing on one leg with arms wide open vividly captured the character's native agile playfulness. The black long gun case prop on the ground also enriched the composition elements, keeping it from looking too monotonous.

The photographer was highly delicate in framing and capturing light, leaving negative space around the overpass's metal railings while keeping the streets and buildings behind from looking cluttered. When the breeze blew past, the natural fluttering of the hair strands and tassels added a lot of liveliness. The entire shooting process was actually a test of the costume styling, as keeping the jacket's neckline, ribbons, and skirt hem in a perfect state required constantly adjusting movements and angles. Looking at these final snapshots, I feel the time spent beforehand on choosing accessories and adjusting my state was entirely worth it. This overpass scene experience made me firmly believe that the authentic recreation of a character by an Anime cosplayer lies not just in the clothing similarity, but in conveying the character's unique temperament through the coordination of expressions, movements, and ambient lighting in a creative roleplay environment.
