For this Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo, I finally pulled off this Shimoe Koharu cosplay look, and even took it for a spin at the Guangzhou Anime Convention. Preparing and executing this gear took considerable effort, especially the floating halo and wing structures, which required several calibrations to stay steady under outdoor lighting and air currents.
For the outfit's details, I wanted to stay as faithful to the original styling as possible: a black sailor-collar jacket paired with a magenta pleated skirt creates a vibrant color contrast full of summer vibes. I meticulously recreated fine nuances like the choker around the neck and the pink piping along the jacket edges according to character references. For the wig, I selected a soft pastel-pink gradient that echoed the black feather accessories, showcasing distinct character traits without feeling out of place.
When shooting this set, I used that "only you" doujinshi prop as a fun premise. Initially, I just struck a serious "confiscation" pose to play up the meme, but the final photos turned out surprisingly full of gap-moe charm. People reacted enthusiastically to the R18 label in the lower right corner; passing fans couldn't help but chuckle and come over to ask for photos. The true joy of cosplay lies in this dimension-breaking interaction—holding a prop and standing there is storytelling in itself.
The weather was very pleasant on the day of the shoot, with neither downpours nor scorching heat. I ran into several friends who were also cosplaying Blue Archive characters. Sharing styling tips and discussing where we commissioned our outfits and wigs in such a like-minded community was truly healing. Having cosplayed for a while now, I'm quite meticulous about props and costumes, always hoping the final photos honor the source material.
In the Cosplay photo sharing set, my photographer friend chose fantastic angles. Utilizing natural outdoor lighting and creamy background bokeh softly contoured my silhouette. The over-the-shoulder looks seated on the sofa and the dynamic gesture pointing at the camera aimed to convey the character's lively and slightly tsundere personality. Convention photos are not just about capturing a polished look, but recording the authentic moments of immersing oneself in that character.
I initially worried about maneuvering the wings indoors or through crowds, but thankfully it wasn't too packed. Standing by the aisle holding the folded black umbrella, a passing girl commented that it looked as if the character had walked right out of the game, which was deeply rewarding. For anime enthusiasts, bringing a beloved character to life in reality is an exhilarating experience.
Now for some styling insights. To keep the wig smooth and frizz-free, I brought styling spray to the venue. Returning to the hotel, the first task was detaching hairpins and headpieces to treat the feather accessories against humidity. Shimoe Koharu's black-and-pink color palette is wonderfully photogenic, maintaining solid color saturation under bright sun or overcast skies alike. Pairing white socks with black shoes flattered leg lines cleanly without overpowering the outfit.
In the final photo with the umbrella, it was originally intended as a combat prop, but holding it horizontally across my waist in a poised stance gave it an unexpectedly narrative flair. Looking through these photos, every cosplay shoot feels like a character study—not just wearing a costume, but understanding her habits and expressions.
