This shoot took place beside an Outdoor swimming pool, blessed with abundant sunlight and crystal-clear, shimmering ripples. For styling, I used Long pink hair with loose curls and lighter gradient ends, paired with blunt bangs and pink contact lenses. The eye makeup was relatively bold, especially the crimson blending at the outer corners to echo the overall pink palette. For wardrobe, the top was a white off-the-shoulder ruffled blouse featuring an oversized pink bow tied at the chest, embellished with lace trim and pearl chains. The bottoms were matching pink ruffled swim briefs with cascading black ribbons on the sides to add textural layering. Atop my head was a white sailor hat bordered with black trim, decorated with miniature pink blossoms and flowing black ribbons. A black fabric scrunchie around my wrist tied these fine details together into an enriched ensemble.
The first set was captured sitting on the poolside tiles: knees bent with hands resting gently atop them. Wearing swimwear demands conscious posture control—elongating leg lines while keeping the torso gracefully poised. The sunlight cast crisp highlights across the skin, while palm trees, parasols, and a yellow inflatable duck in the background set a delightful resort ambiance.
Afterward, I stepped into the water, which reached up to my waist at a comfortable temperature. Shooting in water is quite challenging: fabrics and hair absorb water, gaining weight and adding resistance to every movement. Still, I kept my upper body upright, letting the water surface ripples frame the foreground. In this set, one hand lightly touched the hat brim while the other rested over my chest, directing a focused gaze into the lens. Wet strands clung to my cheeks, and glistening water droplets added a dewy translucence. The photographer used a low-angle perspective, shooting upward from the water level so urban high-rises in the distance blurred smoothly into soft bokeh, locking complete visual attention onto the water ripples and subject.
Post-processing combined cool blue-green aquatic tones with warm pink highlights. The water was rendered crisp and transparent, while skin tones were balanced into a luminous, fair glow with subtle chiaroscuro transitions to avoid overexposure. Regarding makeup, the base needed to be ultra-lightweight and waterproof for entering the pool. Beyond the reddish-pink eyeshadow, fine glitter was placed along the aegyo-sal for a gentle sparkle in natural light. The wig was made of heat-resistant fibers that tangle easily once wet, requiring continuous combing during breaks to retain the twin tails' airy volume. The black ribbons on the hat floated beautifully across the water surface, though timing the shutter release required split-second coordination between two people. The large fabric bow on the chest grew heavy after absorbing water, demanding frequent repositioning to keep its shape full and dimensional on camera.
We shot between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM when the natural light was soft, avoiding harsh overhead sun. The first poolside shot used the leading lines of the pool edge, with the seated pose elongating the legs while water bounce-light filled facial shadows naturally. The second in-water shot was a medium portrait emphasizing surface ripples and bodice details—such as the bow and lace trims—drawn close to evoke intimate warmth. The third was more interactive: raising a hand to touch the hat brim was an impromptu gesture that felt delightfully organic, revealing lively facial expressions and engaging eye contact.
Overall, the in-water shoot went smoother than anticipated. Despite overcoming heavy soaked garments and messy wet hair, the resulting play of light and dynamic water texture was immensely richer than any flat studio backdrop. Blending sailor uniform motifs with 2D charm beside the pool delivered both summer coolness and playful energy. From scouting and styling to shooting in the water, the entire session took about four hours; though soaking in the water for hours was tiring, seeing the finished photos made every second completely worthwhile.
